Hi,

I have been planning on implementing the GFCF diet with my

daughter for about 3 months now and have yet to do anything as I know I need

support and have just not followed up on getting the info (probably

procrastinating because I am worried about undertaking such a big change).

In any case, I understand that there is a support group on this topic that

meets monthly at Flamingo Church (I think). If anyone has more info on

the schedule of these meetings, please share so that I can get started. Thanks

so much!

There used to be monthly meetings of a local chapter of a Celiac Sprue Assoc.(GFCF diet originated for control/(no cure) of Celiac Sprue)in that hospital, in Broward, right off I-95(right before Pompano Beach?)(you saw it from I-95--on the right hand side)You can also get info from the National Chapter(My book may be outdated but they provided me lists of even additives and medications that are forbidden--not that I have gone so far.) There is also many websites for Celiacs. There is one that sends a weekly e-mail, on Fridays, I will forward it, later today, when I receive it. There is also an amazing club/organization run by a husband and wife with Celiac that send newsletters re updates/inroads on staying gluten free(eating out/travelling). Here is their info so you can join: BOB & RUTH’S

I can tell you that after 2 weeks on the diet my son got very aggressive. He even hit us. We went to see our DAN doctor for the first time while this was happening and he said it was normal for that to happen the first few weeks. We are still finding out what foods my son has problems with and as I take them out I do see a difference and if he gets something that he should not I really see a difference. -Hi I don't kno wwhere you are located but @ Whole Foods in

Coral Springs there is an employee by the name of Arlene who has

celiac diet and is also the Demo person there. If you bring a list

of ALL the foods your daughter eats she will personally take you

throughout the store and show you everything that is GFCF. The other

nice thing is let's say you purchase something try it and your

daughter doesn't like it you cna return it for a full refund or

store credit.. I hope the information is helpful. As I know just how

you feel . I just began the diet for our daughter a little over a

week ago. I have yet to see any changes so let's see how it goes.

Good Luck

Hi Aileen,

All children are different, but I have heard that with the little

ones, if they are going to respond to the dietary measures (and not

all kids do, unfortunately) it is usually pretty quick. I think that

for very little kids, the thinking is to give it at least a 3 month

try then reaccess. One week is too early to tell, for most people.

Are you doing GFCF all at once, or in stages? We atarted our son

first CF when he was about 2 and did see results pretty fast, in the

first 2 weeks or so. It wasn't like he suddenly started talking or

anything, but he did seem happier, more social and interactive. For

us, we started the CF due to his terrible sinus and congestion

troubles. We started really more for his health than his ASD

symptoms. He was sick with colds all the time and had terrible tummy

troubles too. It is his physical health that going CF really helped

with, and I think since he felt better physically, he could attend

better to therapy, IMHO.

So once we went CF for a few months, then we added GF. The reaction

we saw to that at first was a bit of mild aggression. It didn't last

long, a week or so, then went away. The positive results with GF

took longer to see and were also gradual.

I would say give it time. Are you keeping any data charts? That can

give you something concrete to look at to see what foods affect your

child, if any. Just something simple, like list a few behaviors

across the top and what your child is eating down the side, then

check off the behviors that happen each day and see it there is a

difference.

I have some tips and links on my blog, if you want or feel free to

email me with certain questions. The GFCF diet is not for everyone,

but for those whom it helps, it really can be a big help. But try

not to be discouraged. Even if you give it a shot and it doesn't

work out, at least you know you did the best you could and now you

have an answer. But I think you should give it a bit more time.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I actually did end up finding a

meeting – the one in Flamingo Church and am in the process of

transitioning my daughter. We have been at it for almost 2 weeks and are

just about GC Free. Just need to figure out how to lose the gum which my daughter

uses for oral stim. Not sure if there is a GFCF gum that we can substitute to.

We also already use chewies but the gum has been so helpful…I hate to

lose it. Any ideas? J

Thanks for following up.

Hi,

My 3-year-old son has been on the gfcf diet for a few

months. It did help with eye contact and interaction

after a few weeks. However, the biggest improvement

came after I tried the elimination diet described in a

book called " Is This Your Child " by D. Rapp. (Her

name is Doreen or Doris, and she is an environmental

medicine doctor). (I bought it used online for less

than $10). By cutting his diet down to just rice,

meat and vegetables for a week and then adding in

foods that people are often sensitive to or that I

suspected he had trouble with one at a time (sugar,

corn, soy, peanuts, etc) I found out that avocado,

corn, eggs and peanuts were causing a HUGE proportion

of his tantrums. His stomach hurt and I had no idea

what was causing it.

He is like a whole new kid now that I know what foods

make him feel sick (he doesn't talk so he couldn't

tell me he didn't feel good). Plus, he had had skin

and blood allergy/sensitivity tests that showed no

problems with any food.

Now we go out to eat or grocery shopping without even

worrying about meltdowns. I never thought I would see

this day. If I test a new food and it bothers him, I

know immediately what it was.

So, if gfcf doesn't help a ton, I highly recommend

trying the elimination diet to make sure you aren't

missing anything!

Good luck!
