Guest guest
Barb, >Does anyone know: >1-Is there a fibroid size limit to any of the options discussed here - > UAE in particular? Some UAE doctors say there's a limit, others say there isn't - some, for instance, won't do UAE if the uterus is above the navel. Anecdotally, women who've had problems with UAE have tended to have had larger fibroids (say over about 10 cm). I don't know about any restrictions with myo, but I'm sure others will. >2-How do you decide which option is best for you? That's a tough question. It depends on so many things - whether insurance coverage might be a problem, for example. Myo is supposedly better for preserving fertility although many women have got pregnant after UAE. UAE is much less invasive with a far quicker recovery time, and the fibroids (in the vast majority of cases) don't seem to grow back, but shrinkage is variable. If you want to be sure they're completely gone, myo is obviously better, although it's more major surgery and there's a high regrowth rate. And remember you can always have a myo if UAE fails, so it might not be an either/or option. >3-How are you finding doctors to tailor the treatment to your >specific situation? Research and word of mouth. >4-Has anyone experienced shrinkage through diets and/or supplements? Personally, I haven't - my fibroids didn't grow using Chinese herbs and acupuncture, but they didn't shrink either. Carolyn
Guest guest
Since everyone has such different symptoms the option that's best for you will be tailored to what symptoms you are enduring. It sounds like bulk symptoms are your real problem as the fibroid is pressing on nearby organs. My approach was to go with the least invasive alternative first. My symptoms were bleeding so that's what I was addressing. For you, I think size is more important, what you need is some shrinkage. I don't think you really can get shrinkage from diet or supplements. This approach can sometimes help with some of the symptoms, but I don't believe actually shrink the fibroid. So, going from least invasive first, UAE might be right for you. Since fertility is not an issue and it sounds like your fibroid is not submucosal (within the uterus), this may be the way to go for you. I would suggest talking to a few Interventional Radiologists that have performed this procedure and see what they have to say about the size of your fibroid. If that isn't an option for you, then probably myomectomy is your next thing to research. I would ask all the doctors you see for things, friends, women on this list, and basically anyone you think might have a lead for referrals to doctors that you could consult with. I would try and get as much feedback as you can from the various doctors. I think when you do that, the answer becomes clear to you what to do and who to have do it. You sound like you are off to a good start with the questions you posted here. Good luck to you in your search. Guest guest
Carolyn, Read a book by Dr Lee that natural progesterone cream with wild yam extract helps to shrink fibroid size. Don't know how far this is true. Is there anybody out there who have tried this? Would be most happy to get some " real " feedback as I just had a myo and my gynae said that there is always a possibility that new fibroids may grow. I would prefer alternative natural supplements rather than synthetic medications which may come with side effects. While you will find that some women are happy with it, quite a few reported that their fibroids grew while using the cream. Dr Lee does not seem to have any evidence to back up his claims, and there is other evidence suggesting that progesterone as well as oestrogen is needed for fibroid growth. If you still want to try it, I would suggest two things. 1) hormonal testing to make sure you really do have an imbalance (high oestrogen/low progesterone) 2) only try if your fibroids are not very large and you can risk the possibility that the cream might promote growth. A woman with a 20 week uterus (I don't know what sizes her individual fibroids are) would not be advised to allow it to get much larger at all before she goes for a more invasive option such as UAE or myomectomy. She could try alternative treatments, preferably under supervision of an experienced therapist, but should be watching carefully for any growth. Herbalists prefer to treat fibroids with dimensions less than 4 cm. UAE and surgery seem to be best with fibroids less than 10 cm, even though larger ones can be treated. Anecdotally, alternative treatments are more successful at alleviating symptoms than at reducing tumour size. Progesterone is accepted conventionally as a treatment to reduce bleeding symptoms. It may also be useful for menopausal symptoms. I thought Carolyn and Sydney gave good answers to the questions posed in the original " New to group - 20 wk options? " message (digest #431) The possibility of kidney enlargement is another reason why Barb F probably shouldn't delay too much in arranging embolisation or surgery. red clover - it is rich in isoflavones, types of phytoestrogen, like soy Used for menopausal symptoms There are very opposing views of whether or not women with fibroids should increase their isoflavone intake. chapparal - I don't know much about this plant, supposed to be anti-tumour but also has dangerous side effects It was mentioned on the HealingFromFibroidsNaturally yahoo groups. Remember that herbs (and any medicines) interact with each other; it's best to get expert advice The low intake of meat and dairy, corresponding increase of fruit, veg and whole grains, and preference for organic products are generally good for your health and for the environment. Guest guest
Barb, I had UAE for a subserosal fibroid approximately the size you are describing. I was given the choice of hysterectomy, myomectomy, or UAE by the well qualified doctors I used. In the end I chose UAE because it had the lowest risks and the lowest chance of losing my uterus. It is my understanding that " size doesn't matter " for the procedure but size may be an indicator for probable results. The IR who performed my UAE said, " a fibroid this size may be best treated by hysterectomy, " and actually he added, " if it was me I would have a hysterectomy. " He also told me that it would be anticipated that the fibroid could shrink up to 50%, thus, starting with a huge fibroid I would still have a big bulk left. He had no hesitation with UAE if that was my choice. At one year (May 8) I have had no side affects or problems from the procedure, it is my belief that large fibroids alone are not more problematic. My fibroid has shrunk considerable, possibly the 50%, I quit keeping track. However, I still have more bulk than is comfortable for me, I would guess that for some women my improvement would be enough, many symptoms are gone- I want perfection. Life is much better at present, my fibroids were intolerable a year ago. I will see how the next months go and consider myomectomy if necessary, still hanging on to the uterus. The gyn I used initially discussed following up with myomectomy if I didn't get resolution with the UAE. I did not achieve resolution to my fibroids with diet and supplements, however, I do get many positive benefits from accupressure and herbs, I love the herbs I take and think they are the best for fibroids. The accrpressure and herbs continue to help a lot, especially with inflamation type bloating feeling. Guest guest
Hello group, I am also new to the group and very new to this subject as I just found out last week about my fibroid. How big is a 20 week fibroid?? Mine is the size of a lemon. I have many questions, but will start out with my BIGGEST question: Is the only reason to keep your uterus to have children??? I do not want to have a surgery and then in a few years have more fibroids grow, or find that I am still having pain. I am feeling that if a hysterecomy gets rid of the problem once and for all...why not? Thanks for your help..GINA Re: New to group - 20 wk options? Guest guest
Regarding what I wrote about how long a woman can afford to experiment with complementary/alternative therapies before opting for a more radical treatment (UAE, surgery). I note the " Exclusion criteria " for Dr Mehl-Madrona's patients (treated with herbs, acupuncture, massage and visualisation: " Subjects whose fibroids were growing at a rate of 6 cm/year in diameter or subjects with a hemoglobin value less than 8 gm% were excluded. Patients with hydronephrosis, patients who were post-menopause or currently taking depot-contraceptives or birth control pills were also excluded from the treatment group. " It is clear that the first three exclusion criteria were meant to exclude woman who needed more urgent treatment and could not afford to wait to see whether the herbal regime was effective. (exclusion criteria quoted from a report by E. Mehl-Madrona, M.D., Ph.D. Clinical Program Director Center for Health and Healing Beth Israel Medical Center 245 Fifth Avenue, 2nd Floor New York, NY 10016 I think he was based in Pittsburgh at the time of the reported research programme)

Guest guest
, You asked how big a 20 week fibroid is.. It is in between a melon and a pineapple, melon being a 16 week and pineapple being a 22 week. My fibroid is 4.4 cm and has been described as being between a plum and a lemon. Some fibroids grow as big as watermelons which is the size of the uterus when giving birth. Hope this helps. No, having children is not the only reason to keep the uterus. The uterus along with the ovaries offer many great benefits to the female body. The latest that I've read is that removing the uterus takes away the protective agents that the uterus offers in proctecting females from heart disease. I will find the article and give more info on this. Good luck in making your decision. You have options. Thanks, SKY --- Bonfietti wrote: > Hello group, > > I am also new to the group and very new to this > subject as I just found out last week about my > fibroid. > > How big is a 20 week fibroid?? Guest guest
, You asked how big a 20 week fibroid is.. Guest guest
Please read whatever you can about why you should avoid a hysterectomy if at all possible. I realize that some women choose this option and are happy with it, but I would go into this decision with as much knowledge as I could aquire. Two suggested books are " The No Hysterectomy Option " by Dr. Goldfarb and " The Hysterectomy Hoax " by Stanley West. Also contact the HERS foundation and they will send you literature on hysterectomies. Apparently there is a lot of reasons to keep you uterus if possible and it is not just an organ to bear children. It does a lot of different things for your body as a whole and is a very important organ. In Dr. Goldfarb's book there is a lot of insight as to why so many hysterectomies are performed annually and it is quite maddening. Go forth and educate yourself, then make the decision that is best for you. Amy
Guest guest
Hi, I just found out yesterday that I have at least 5 fibroids, average size is like an orange, that adds up to a 20-wk uterus. That doesn't give me any specifics about the size of each - I've seen oranges of various sizes. I am continuing to see different doctors to gather more info about my condition and discuss the options. I hope to reach a conclusion soon. I agree with the other responses you have received - the uterus has important functions other than only to have children. Many women do decide that hysterectomy is their best choice and are happy with that. Others opt for different methods of dealing with fibroids. The good news is they are benign and there is time to learn and choose treatment. The important thing is to be informed about your situation and make a decision that is appropriate for you - one that you can live with comfortably. Remember that there are aftercare considerations for each option. Best of luck! Guest guest
Hi everyone: I am new to the group also and just found out last week that my fibroid had enlarged in size and is now 9cm in diameter. The gynecologist is recommending hysterectomy, of course. I am 44 and would like to keep my body parts at this stage in my life. My biggest fear is it being cancerous. Has anyone heard of a test to determine cancer on fibroids before hysterectomy recommended as the only solution? As I'm researching alternatives, it's great to have others to talk with about what works and what doesn't. I'm considering UAE or myomectomy and am wondering if anyone has had negative experiences or complications with these 2 procedures. I am also VERY interested in hearing from anyone who has found herbal supplements or anything natural that works to shrink them. I read 's and Barb's accounts on natural supplements, but would like to hear more from on what she has taken specifically. And has anyone found natural supplements to give long term results? Thanks for the input! Donna Re: Re: New to group - 20 wk options? I was told my 20 weeks uterus was the size of an adult human head. Guest guest
Hello, My Doctor perfromed a diagnostic hysteroscopy so he could send a small piece (from the uterus, just as small as the shedding of your lining during your m-cycle ) to a Pathologist to determine if I had a cancer cells in my uterus. My Doc. perfromed this first to rule out cancer and to determine what types of fibroids I had, then he made his suggestion after ruling out cancer which is not hysterectomy.
