Guest guest
I would also like to add that many RDs who are new to business/private practice, tend charge or to take on jobs that pay WAYYY too little, out of fear of no business. This hurts the entire profession. I know it's hard to walk away, but when a professional steps back from an offer and really calculates it out, they then can start to see what they would actually make/hour. What is YOUR perceived value?? Here's a good example: A client received a request for a speaking submission and he was thrilled. He asked me what he should request for his fee. I gave him some ideas, but then I asked what HE would feel comfortable with. His initial quote was very low, and when I challenged him on it, he said he wanted to get the job! However, as he started to consider the time necessary to put his presentation together, his fee started to climb. He did submit a lower rate, though, and didn't get it. He was glad and learned a VERY important lesson! One last comment: For anyone who wishes to work with corporations, you do need to remember that their perceived value is based on your rate. Low rate, low perceived value. It's not unusual for consultants/coaches/professionals in the corporate environment to ask for, and receive thousands in fees. And usually it is NOT per hour, but based on per job. Same with professional speaking. If you were to request a fee of ~$5,000+, you'll be taken much more seriously than if you ask for $500. An excellent book that every RD who is considering business should read is Alan Weiss' book, " Million Dollar Consulting " .
