was on a respirator during her last hospitalization, and the doctors

suggested we try nitric oxide in her ventilator (she was in the Respiratory

Intensive Care Unit at Mass. Gen., which is staffed by anesthesiologist).

Arterial blood gases showed an improvement following the administration of NO

plus the PEEP or PIP (something like that) on her ventilator showed

improvement.

You need to keep in mind that NO was administered at a point where most other

options were exhausted and at the time (1997) the use of NO in the RICU

setting was experimental. Also, during the course of 's illness,

respiratory issues were not usually an issue. The hospitalization noted

above was because she needed surgery, Nitric Oxide was not used during the

surgery, post surgery recovery was uneventful for the first 48 hours and then

she went into respiratory distress.

In summary I feel that in 's case the use of NO did not appear to

have any adverse effect. I'm not certain if NO is now more commonly used in

intensive care or respiratory care situations, thus you may need to address

the use of NO in other than a surgical setting.
