Guest guest
Hi , I can soooo understand what you are going through! I am right there with you. I've been through the same thing, only different medication. I've been hospitalized 2 times for losing too much blood (make sure you don't get to that point). Keep communicating with your doctor, maybe even try a new doctor...one that's interested in really getting to the bottom of the problem. I was taking 3 bc pills per day to stop the bleeding. I felt like a big mess...and it still didn't stop. Eight days ago, I got a Lupron shot (in the bottom, ouch) and it has calmed the bleeding down, but I still have an episode every other day...still waiting or the Lupron to take effect and put me in temporary menopause. Then the doctor suggests a Progesterone (Provera) patch after 1 month of Lupron, to stop the bleeding. It might work--I'll let you know because maybe it might help you. Otherwise, I'm thinking that I'm tired of messing with my hormones...I'm going insane. I'm looking into the UAE. Please keep in touch, let me know how you are doing. I'll let you know if I find something that works! Best, swilli4608@...

Guest guest
Thanks Bonnie. As we all know, there are at least a few different treatments for fibroids, depending on the type and placement of the fibroid. So, its crazy to suggest that everyone get the same treatment. I am certainly not condoning hormone treatment, it just happens to be what I am using right now while I figure out whats going on. I'm 32, and am at the beginning of all this stuff myself. I never even knew what a fibroid was a month ago. So, I 'm just trying to offer my experience, and commiserrate with others in the same situation. It's been hell. And like you said, its for to really look at all her options while she's able, instead of waiting til the bleeding is so severe you are left with few options (my situation). I haven't had a chance to even meet w/ my doctor under normal circumstances---its always been damage control, doing something to stop the bleeding so I don't have to have another transfusion. I will finally meet with her tomorrow to actually sit down and discuss my options. After tomorrow, I might be shopping for a new doctor myself!!! Thanks for the advice. and good luck . --

Guest guest
It sounds as if your 2 small fibroids are submucosal. They can easily be removed vaginally in a type of myomectomy called a hysterescopic re-section. There would also be the option of UAE It is terrible for you to be going through this.I would recommend that you change doctors and find someone who will help you. Guest guest
I agree. I had a 3 cm submucousal that was causing heavy bleeding. I also was on Loestrin, which did nothing for the bleeding except cause breakthrough bleeding between my periods. I had hysteroscopic reseciton last month and the surgery was very easy for me. I was home by noon, and didn't need any pain medication after I left the hospital. Find out from your doctor where your fibroids are located. If you are able to go the hysteroscopic route make sure that the surgeon is well qualified in hysteroscopy. Not every gyn has had the training needed. --- " Pedro B. Guest guest
I'm 38 and had the same trouble with the Loestrin and stopped taking it pretty quickly. I decided that I didn't want to play the roulette game with different BC pills. I had an ultrasound early on but decided after reading up on it that they are not specific enough to show a variety of GYN problems and may not have enough resolution to get all the details you need about your fibroids. I decided to find out exactly what was and was not wrong (pushed very hard for a MRI to rule out several other GYN problems and also because most IR's that I've read about want a MRI before they make the decision on UAE). Also used this time to research the options on line so I could decide for myself what seemed to be best. I now have an appt with an IR the first week in March. If you want to take the " waiting " approach it is your choice. I decided that was not best for me. In my opinion, based on what I've read, some choices (such as UAE) may have better results if you don't wait till the fibroids become very large. If you don't want to take the " waiting " approach, it is important to educate yourself so that you can " guide " your treatment. You are not alone. Guest guest
I'm sorry ,I can't agree that not get a bit more pro-active than what you are suggesting-I don't think its a " maybe its time for a new doctor " I think it is definitely time for a new doctor. Sub mucosals can grow, even a tiny amount and cause tremendous bleedingIt would not be an unheard of story to have a doctor suggest a hysterectomy under an emergency situation. There would be no time for to look at options,to research her problem. She's in her 30's and I don't think that hormonal control should be the first line of defense. For someone much, much closer to menopause-well that may be a different story. I don't know how old you are,but Lupron is mighty powerful medicine that will just wear off and there will be your fibroids coming back and causing you a problem again.I do not think you are a candidate for UAE while still under the influence of Lupron.Lupron only produces a temporary menopause and does not treat the underlying condition. Guest guest
Hi , I am sorry to hear about your symptoms. They sound miserable ;-( When I was first diagnosed they put me on BC to control the bleeding during my wedding/honeymoon months. It did not really help at all and I went off of them as soon as my supply ran out. I have heard of them helping others though. Some people have had success with diet changes, basically limiting red meat, beef, and ham and adding more green leafy vegetables. Soy seems to be popular as soy isoflavones have a weak estrogenic effect and can displace the body's estrogen from estrogen receptors easing symptoms. Exercise also seems to help ease symptoms. I do not know anything about the Levlin or Zovia. Others on the newsgroup probably will though. I am also new to this group and have found that just being on the newsgroup has helped me sort out a lot of the confusion regarding fibroid treatments. Good Luck and welcome to the group, new to list Hi all I am new to the list... and this is my first posting. I joined the list because I am basically at my wits end with bleeding like crazy, trying several different BC pills, (one of which made me feel like I was going nuts and the other has made me bleed more than ever...) I guess I am feeling rather bummed out about the whole thing. I have 2 fibroids, both of which are rather small (a little over an inch each), I'm 33 years old, no kids, in a new relationship (which is difficult... embarrassment during sex, all the bleeding, etc). I worry about getting older, having kids one day, whether this will effect things... My doctor has prescribed Levlin (which made me feel horribly depressed), Loestrin (which is making me bleed like crazy... changing pads every 2 hours for the last month), and now she's switching me to Zovia. Honestly, I am starting to feel really hopeless about the whole thing, particularly the bleeding. I feel tired all the time and like I can't see an end in sight. I have been doing some research and it sounds like usually the treatment is different for fibroids, and so I'm questioning my doctor's prescriptions, particularly once I heard that the fibroids thrive on estrogen. All very confusing. Sorry to be SO negative and to dump. I was hoping to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience and whether there was some advice/hope out there. Thanks so much for reading,
Guest guest
Hi . Just wanted to let you know that you are not alone! I had about a dozen submucosal fibroids when I was 27-30 that I finally had removed via hysteroscopic resection. It made a HUGE difference in my life starting the next month. [Note: before the resection I'd been to OBGYN clinic at grad school repeatedly and was always told that the horrible bleeding was " stress " . Interesting that it was only when I got a " real " job that my docs considered that there might be something more going on! The resection did take care of the symptoms for about a year and a half, but now a couple years later I've got one medium-sized intramural fibroid that apparently is close enough to the endometrium to cause the same delightful symptoms. The horror of having it all start over again was extremely depressing, and birth-control pills plus inactivity and anemia made me feel once again like a washed-out slug. I have also gained 20 lbs during the last couple years period which didn't exactly enhance my self-image, plus there is the guilt of feeling like my extra weight is contributing to the fibroids via estrogen production which contribute to my inactivity which contributes to the extra weight...and then there is the possibility that the birth-control pills I was taking to control the bleeding were also making the fibroids worse. The self-blame cycle can be vicious. Now the good news: I had UAE a couple weeks ago and am eagerly (!!!) awaiting the first period with fingers crossed. BTW, I was bleeding when I went in for UAE and came out with only spotting--the usual Gush was immediately averted! I already feel better and am hopeful that UAE got not only the big one but also the " seedlings " . About fertility: no one seems to know for sure what the outcome is with UAE, but my IR thought that the chances that I, at 33, would have fertility problems from UAE were probably lower than they were that a myomectomy might result in complications requiring hysterectomy. Anyway, good luck and know that there are solutions and also other people who have experienced this! V ps have any studies indicated that birth-control pill usage might tip women over the edge into having fibroids who might otherwise not have them? I'm just wondering if my years of BC pills in my 20s plus all the bovine-growth-hormone I ingested during my milk-gulping youth could be the partial culprits. on 2/18/02 12:56 PM, Pedro B. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group. I have suffered from the same symptoms you are having and also in my early 30s, no kids yet. I was very depressed & tired all the time from my 2 very small fibroids which caused me alot of pain and heavy bleeding. I felt discouraged and hopeless. I was so confused about what choices i should make. When i joined this group i found out there is hope after the finding of fibroiods. I met women on this website who had shared the same experiences as me and who had bravely taken steps to battle their fibroids. In the beginning i said i would do nothing but wait & bear with my pain, suffering & heavy bleeding. It became unbearable dealing with the pain. Then i found many women on this site who had done something about their fibroids & had successfully gone on with their lives. Even though some of us share the same experiences everyones choice is different for their needs. I am having my myomectomy this friday to remove my fibroids. You should find a great doctor you are comfortable with, and do research to educate yourself on fibroids. Stay in communication with the women on this website as they will help you gain your encouragement & make the best choices. I am sure your choice will the best for your needs and you too will soon be uplifted! Take care, I will let everyone know how my hospital stay was. Guest guest
, No need for apologies. We are all fighting.Keep in mind that there is more than likely a solution that will work for you-the key is the right doctor and that sometimes can take work. Anyway best of luck to you Bonnie SWilli4608@... wrote: > Thanks Bonnie. > As we all know, there are at least a few different treatments for fibroids, > depending on the type and placement of the fibroid.
