(Address: Department of Preventive Medicine, University of Southern California, 1441 Eastlake Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90089, USA. E-mail: annawu@... ). Summary: In a study involving 3,315 Chinese women, results indicate that higher green tea intake may be associated with a lower risk of breast cancer. Diet and percent mammographic density (PMD: a marker for breast cancer risk) were assessed. After adjusting for potential confounders, daily green tea drinkers showed significantly lower PMD than non-tea drinkers. Additionally, among postmenopausal women, high soy intake was associated with lower PMD, but the association did not remain significant after adjusting for green tea intake. Thus the authors of this study conclude, " Our findings suggest that both regular green tea and high soy intake may have beneficial effects on the breast; the effect of green tea on PMD may be stronger than the effect of soy.
