Guest guest
If you have a regular income rather than self employment, then you put it with other job related expenses in the last section of the Schedule A Itemized Deductions, the section has another line that includes stuff like your security deposit box fee and tax preparation fees. Your membership and continuing ed type expenses would qualify as job related expenses. Guest guest
I do not know for sure if it is tax deductible. However, I was told by my former HR director that it is not legal for an employer to require an employee to be a member of any organization, unless the employer pays for it. They can, of course, require you to be registered and/or licensed (which either you or they pay for), but cannot require you to pay for membership to any organization. Guest guest
This is true, but only if your business expenses exceed a percentage of your income, so you must have a significant amount of expenses in order to qualify to deduct such. ________________________________ To: rd-usa Sent: Tue, February 1, 2011 10:48:11 AM Subject: RE: ADA membership - tax deductible? Guest guest
Remember that part of that dues money goes to support the ADA PAC and you cannot deduct the PAC part of the dues. Look on your membership renewal form from 2010 and it spells out what part of the dues might be deductible for you. Also depending on your source of income you may deduct it on Schedule A and your business expenses need to be greater than 2% of your income. Or you may deduct the dues on Schedule C if some or all of your income is from self-employment. I hope that is clear. Guest guest
All of the comments so far are correct. (In addition to being an RD, I do the taxes for my husbands businesses and have been a bookkeeper.) Note: if you are an “independent contractor†and, thus, report your income on a Schedule C, dues and license fees are all deductible expenses on the Schedule C. Guest guest
It probably WAS me, , and I STILL enter all of my expenses as deductions for my accountant, for the business. I look at it this way: If I add it as a business expense, and my accountant can take, it great! If not, nothing lost. However, all expenses, including professional dues, and even coaching (like my services) is tax deductible! Grin; a good reason to hire a coach, huh? Guest guest
Yep, it was Margie :-) However you cannot deduct clothing, unless it is a uniform used exclusively for the work you do. Yes we might wear business clothes for our work, but doesn't count :-) And don't forget the charitable stuff you do! Although you cannot deduct the *time* you do something (eg a pro bono talk), you can deduct mileage to/from. I do volunteer work for Great Dane Rescue and deduct any food, toys, treats, etc that I give my fosters. Also any mileage transporting them to/from etc. I've been going by what my tax guy says for years and follow his advice...and yes he is also tax deductible. (PS about charitable mileage...it's only 14cents per mile vs business mileage...for 2010 it was 50cents per mile) Neily Neily, MS, RD, CSSD, LDRegistered and Licensed DietitianBoard Certified Specialist in Sports DieteticsNutrition Consultant to Meals to Live, LLC www.mealstolive.com Nutrition Entrepreneurs DPG Treasurer 2009-2011Cell:  Website: www.jenniferneily.com Follow me on Facebook! www.facebook.com/NeilyonNutrition   > > > > Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do any of you deduct your ADA > dues/RD > > renewals from your taxes?
