Guest guest
I fully agree with both of you! I recently weaned my 12 month old. The whole time I struggled with many people still being uncomfortable with breast feeding. A family member who is a nurse tried to discourage me from doing it with my first child and finally, learned to keep her opinions to herself with my second child. I was always very discreet when I nursed my both of my kids. She just felt for some reason that formula and bottles were better and that there was something gross about nursing a baby! She has even read all of the studies that say otherwise! I hope things change for future moms! It needs to become the norm in our society. > > > > > > > This is funny! Guest guest
You make a good point about how we think human milk from another human is gross, but will slug down cow's milk or goats milk like it's perfectly OK. Funny! But we aren't the only species who will drink other mammals' milk. We just have thumbs and can get to it. Any mammal will scarf down another mammal's milk, if they can get to it. W. Guest guest
However most mammals don't make it that easy for others to access. And getting it to come out is actually a physical learned task. I imagine the animal kingdom has some examples of milk bandits but I think if mama wolf let the jungle boy in with her litter it was out of kindness not thievery on jungle boy's part. ing occurs though. The cuckoo lays its eggs in other bird's nests and the other birds take care of the baby. Neglectful parenting taken to a new level -cuckoo babies have been found with 150 different types of parent birds - (none with breasts however - I got lost in the woods a moment). A wet nurse was a regular position with hiring guidelines to follow in certain times and places. I think it is a shame that the ice cream got shut down so fast - expensive novelty is where things start - trendy and expensive and then everyone wants it. We may need martini glasses of human milk ice cream to forward the true purpose of the mammary equipment (is breast best or is mammary gland better - cleaner and more science-y?) On the other hand it could be early days and just promoting the Ewww response - a backwards step. I have been thinking that as a medicinal super food sort of thing that breast milk might have potential and why shouldn't women have the option of a different form of productivity. However a society would need to question its values when babies don't get the breast milk but billionaires do. I am for more human milk banks for babies, with 'donated' milk that is screened but some reimbursement incentive would probably be needed to support the womens' efforts. Formula really isn't as good, so how can we make " wet nurse " a respected profession with skilled lactation specialists. Some might be lactation coaches that aren't just banking milk but might have some interactive training sessions to help mom and baby learn the skills to support their own breast feeding dyad. I don't think we know enough about communicable disease yet - human milk ice cream really was a health gamble. Why risk for novelty? Bungee jump or share bodily fluids - a toss up. Screened, trained, motivated workers supplying an essential service to infant and maternal development - that would be a novelty I would like to see. Guest guest
I should have done that when I finished breastfeeding my girls - could have kept up that high calorie diet then by selling the breast milk :-) I know Salma Hayek breast fed a malnourished baby in Sierra Leone while touring and you thought she had committed a crime. I thought it was amazing. On Mon, Mar 7, 2011 at 12:20 PM, Vajda wrote: > > > However most mammals don't make it that easy for others to access. Guest guest
My father and all his siblings were raised by a wet-nurse. They loved her dearly and the family honored her until her death. I remember her. She was wonderful. My grandmother had 13 children and 2 brain tumors in between some. She was a devout Catholic and this was all happening around 1915. I ask, isn't there mother's milk available from some sort of bank? I think I've read of this somewhere. And no, I'm not advocating mother's milk ice cream.
