Intake of a Diet with a High Glycemic Load Linked to Breast Cancer

Reference: " Dietary carbohydrates, fiber, and breast cancer risk in

Chinese women, " Wen W, Shu XO, et al, Am J Clin Nutr, 2008 Dec 3; [Epub

ahead of print]. (Address: Vanderbilt Epidemiology Center, Vanderbilt

University Medical Center, Nashville, TN, USA).

Summary: In a population-based, cohort, prospective study involving

74,942 women between the ages of 40 and 70 years, who were followed for

an average of 7.35 years, during which time 616 cases of breast cancer

were documented, higher intake of carbohydrates was associated with an

increased risk of breast cancer in premenopausal women or women under

the age of 50 years (HR=2.01 for the highest quintile of intake, HR=1.47

for the fourth highest quintile of intake). A similar association was

found for glycemic load, where higher glycemic load was associated with

higher risk of breast cancer. These results suggest that diet, in

particular, carbohydrate intake and intake of diet with a high glycemic

load, may increase the risk of breast cancer.
