"Parents Assisting and Lending Support" P.A.L.S was created through the joint efforts of UM-NSU CARD and family members of individuals with autism or other related disorders. These family members possess extensive experience navigating the broad spectrum of resources available in the local geographic area. They also recognize the great benefits that can be achieved when parents are able to share experiences and ideas, both one to one and in group settings. The purpose of P.A.L.S. is to provide individualized assistance to families and to serve as a connection to the local autism community. There is no charge for P.A.L.S. services. P.A.L.S members work directly with UM-NSU CARD clinicians to support families. These family members have undergone extensive training and continue on-going education in order to be well informed and aware of current available resources. How to Access P.A.L.S.? After each family has completed a CARD intake, a CARD clinician is designated. Families may request to speak with a P.A.L.S. family member through their CARD clinician or they may e-mail P.A.L.S. directly at: miamicardpals@... Ms. Schulson and Ms. Lohr initially developed this program as part of their participation in DOE/CARD's Partnership for Effective Programming for Students with Autism (PEPSA). Their CARD partner is Sotelo-Bumberg. The purpose of their project is to design an inclusion classroom that combines typical 4th graders with special needs students from the autism cluster at Parkside Elementary School in Broward County. The project is a systematic effort to meaningfully engage students in inclusive opportunities (academic, social, and recreational) and, ultimately, to build friendships and relationships. The review committee was impressed with the fact that these teachers (one general education and one special education) have

developed a wonderful partnership that is clearly benefiting their students. Their inspired creativity and leadership in developing this program earned them the first place award of $2500 to support the continuation and expansion of this program. Second Place - $1500 Colleen Rowe submitted a proposal to support a project aimed at introducing video modeling and videotaped instructional methodologies to her prekindergarten students at Key Largo School in Monroe County. Ms. Rowe currently teaches 14 students in an inclusion program in her school. The review committee was impressed with Ms. Rowe's vision and with the fact that she has the support of her district administrator, her school administrators, and the technological support of other staff to implement this program. The videotaped lessons she will develop will ultimately be applied beyond her classroom and will include the entire

prekindergarten program, which has approximately 70 students in ESE, Head Start and VPK combined. Ms. Rowe's technology-inspired project earned our contest's second place award of $1500. Third Place - $500 Karyn M. Henry is a speech-language pathologist at Sheridan Park Elementary School in Broward County. Ms. Henry submitted a proposal to support her project aimed at integrating language and cooking within an autism cluster in her school. Ms. Henry has developed a model program that affords students with autism the opportunity to engage in weekly whole group cooking lessons. These lessons incorporate verbal, visual, motoric, auditory and kinesthetic instructional modalities within a highly functional learning context and allow the students to discover science (cause and effect, solids vs. liquids, hot vs. cold), math (units and measurement), and sensory (taste, texture)

experiences. Ms. Henry's innovative program earned our contest's third place prize of $500. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks to our sponsors the event is now SOLD OUT You can still donate a silent auction item for Tropical Nights to benefit UM-NSU CARD and our families! Are you concerned about a

language delay or social problem? If so we invite you to participate in the University of Miami's study: Building Social Communication Skills in Young Children As a result of current research with infant siblings, an increasing number of children at risk for ASD are being referred for early intervention. Currently, there is extremely limited data to inform families of appropriate intervention treatments,

particularly in the toddler period. For this reason, researchers at the University of Miami have established an urgent need to document effective treatments in this age range. We are seeking families with toddlers between 15 and 24 months of age who are at risk for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to participate in a multi-site project evaluating Hanen's More than Words Program. More than Words is a parent-training intervention designed specifically for parents of very young children with ASD in order to enhance social communication in children as well as improve overall parenting communication

strategies. If you would like more information about this study please email Cardona at ccardona@... or call for more information. More information can also be located on our intervention study website: http://www.psy.miami.edu/faculty/dmessinger/fp/building.htm.Our next group is scheduled to start next week! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Supported Training Employment
