Guest guest
I think that I am going to bite the bullet here so to speak and pay out of pocket to have this test done on my 3 year old ASD /SPD son …. Insurance won’t cover it but I am reading so many articles that say that the immune system and the food intolerances go hand in hand…. My son has been on 18 antibiotics and is sick every single month…. I have not tried the GFCF diet yet, it’s such a huge commitment to make and not to mention expensive too … I read today that food intolerance could actually cause the immune system to weaken and cause the chronic colds and sinus infections that my son gets every single month…. Anyone else heard of this ? Can anyone recommend who they’ve used for this food tolerance test ? I can’t afford the DAN doctor but I may be able to afford the one test and get the results sent directly to me …. The pediatrician does NOT believe in this and I would love nothing more than to prove him wrong on this and so many other things that he is so closed minded about…. I had to beg him to order a yeast test and he assured me it would come back negative and guess what, it came back positive…. He was not happy … he still thinks that biomedical things are ridiculous and don’t work ! I’ve heard of the Great plains lab, but that’s about it - can anyone offer assistance or suggestions for me ? Thanks so much
Guest guest
Our son had various tummy troubles which led us to a gastroenterologist. We asked to have some food allergy tests done at the same time (celiac runs in my family and our son had some signs) so since the gastro ordered the tests, they were covered by our insurance. Our GI at the time (he has since moved away) had no trouble bundling a test order. He was also very ASD friendly. The office we used was through UM's pediatric gastroenterology in Weston. But as I said, my son had the problem of chronic diarrhea or chronic constipation, which is why we went. Another route might be to go to an allergist, you might get some insurance coverage for the tests that way too. I think with Great Plains you still have to have doctor's persciption, you can't just order it yourself online, though I could be wrong. There are other places you can order online without a script, but I think you might want a professional to help you understand the results. Maybe someone here will have info. But you do not have to go to a DAN doc. You just need to know what you want tested and find a doctor who can help. I would recommend getting tests done, if you can, before starting any dietary modifications. I have heard, and our personal experience also shows, for what it is worth, that food allergies and other digestive issues do affect your immune system. You can help support the immune system with over the counter probiotics. Once you have your tests, you can also get advice on dietary modifications from a certified nutritionist. That will probably not be covered either, but it could be less than a DAN doc, and easier to get an appointment. Our gastro recommended a nutritionist at Joe DiMaggio hospital and I think it was about $100 for the first visit (which was long, 1-2 hours) then $25 for follow-ups, but that was a few years ago. Hope this helps. > > I think that I am going to bite the bullet here so to speak and pay out of > pocket to have this test done on my 3 year old ASD /SPD son .. From: sList [mailto:sList ] On Behalf Of Jeannine Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2008 9:36 PM To: 'TinaTerriAustin' Subject: RE: Food Intolerance Test Oh that makes such sense, I never really thought of that !!! From day one I was telling my pediatrician that I felt my son had a milk allergy with the formula and she said I was crazy… I switched him from formula to formula, he could not tolerate one single formula… he was sick on every one of them… they put him on zantac and prevacid and said he had acid reflux but I always felt it was a milk allergy…. What you said makes sense, maybe that is why he was affected by the vaccines …. His little body was busy fighting off this allergy…. He was always so sick with throwing up and diarrhea and constipation – he just could never get “ happy” on any formula I gave him …. up to 1 year of age he was developing perfect, talking, walking, social – then 3 months after the MMR and vaccines he went crazy and we lost him to autism … then he was sick month after month with colds, flu, croup, bronchitis, fever … month after month… he’s 3 now and he’s been on 18 antibiotics… he had strep throat 2 weeks ago and they put him on augmentin – he has a sinus infection right now and they put him on biaxin – so now he’s been on 2 more antibiotics just this month alone !!! It’s crazy… I’ve been to THREE immunologists who told me that his immune system is weak but they don’t agree with anything biomedical or natural to help it and that they don’t believe in the link to autism and told me I am nuts !!! I am at such a loss here – I feel so helpless - there has to be a doctor out there who can help my poor child not to get sick every single month…. He is literally never healthy more than 2 weeks per month ! It’s to the point now where my marriage is suffering , people are commenting about his health and what on earth am I doing about it and questioning me as a mother - when the reality is that I take him to the doctor 3-4 times every single month for help… I research like crazy, I read books, I talk to other mothers, I joined about 20 different yahoo groups…. I am trying to get some answers….. but I don’t know where else to turn when every doctor tells me that there is nothing I can do and that “all kids get sick “!!! Do you know how I can find out the exact diagnostic codes for the tests ? All 3 of the immunologists refused to order the food intolerance test and said that I was crazy to think that food and autism and immunity are related !!! They did the regular one and it came back that he has no immediate allergies – but I really want to do the food intolerance one where it can test for the leaky gut also – I know he has the leaky gut… when I give him apple juice, within 10 minutes he turns into the Tasmanian devil, he starts to body slam into things, spin, head bang and go crazy…. Anything with apples sets him off the wall …. Also raisins and grape juice… I really want to do the test where I can get the list of the 100+ foods and have it tell me which ones he is reacting to - you know ?? Thanks so much for your insight !!! One test is immediate reaction and the other is delayed reaction to foods and other environmental allergy prospects. So, yes, insurance can cover, just be sure to request the right test. Do the blood test and don't foget delayed reactions test. Yes, I firmly believe that the digestive system is directly related to immune function or dysfunction. For my son, I believe that because of his allergy to milk/casein (which he was fed from birth in his formula) compromised his immune system to the point that he was adversely affected by his vaccinations. In other words, his body was so busy fighting his allergy to certain foods that he was unable to fight/tolerate the vaccinations. Just my opinion.....
