Hiring personal trainers and personal chefs and making erstwhile psychologists and doctors famous and having all the money in the world apparently is not enough to solve the problem. So what does that tell us about the obesity issue in this country! The solution is not exercise. The solution is not dieting. The solution is not money! Of course, you might say that had she continued exercising and dieting, she might not have gained weight but that's the problem. How does one adopt a regimen so alien to her way of life and continue it forever? And she had more support than any of us will ever have and stills he was unable to maintain the regimen. In front of the world, she " slipped " and started enjoying her food. In the article she states that she started to eat whatever she wanted. OMG. What a terrible idea. To eat whatever you want. Why is that a crime or something that one should be sorry about. To enjoy the food you eat. Some of you eat whatever you want and stay slim and trim but that's because you don't " want " the same foods that Oprah (and I) want. And how do we retrain ourselves (without a lobotomy or electroshock therapy) to eat only " good " foods in " good amounts " whenever we want? I admit to some bias here. I'm sort of glad she got fat again. It's a lesson for everyone who thinks that if someone wanted to lose weight and keep it off, they could. Here's someone who has every advantage and short of having someone smack her each time she reaches for something she shouldn't, she has been unable to stay at her goal. No doubt she will be making some new guru rich and famous come the new year when she unveils whatever new program she will adopt to change her life. I only wish that some dietitian can break down that door and enter her inner sanctum. Not that I think we have the solution but why shouldn't one of us benefit from her quest! Guest guest
I think the RD from AZ should go break the door down, it sounds from her email that she has the right stuff. It would take a special type of Dietitian to take all that into account and still be successful. I personally tried working with eating disorder clients, and after a few months realized I do not have what it takes. I am more of the meat and potatoes kinda food service/adm type of dietitian. Thankfully there is room and jobs for all types of RDs. I have aged to the point now to know that it is ok to not specialize in all Dietetic areas and when someone asks me a question about the latest fad diet, or a specific phytochemical, it is ok to say, I don't know, but I can refer you to someone that might. It took me 10 years before I was confident enough to say, I don't know. just my two cents. Would love to hear other's opinions. Guest guest
We all know how difficult it is to lose wt but even more to keep it of. Even if we haven't been experienced on a personal level.I recently read a book that was not only a great reading, fun and wit but also gave the perspective of the " client " with wt lose and wt issue. Not a scientific-base, but rather a personal memoir of the author and her struggle with wt loss.I strongly recommend it : Thin is the New Happy, el.Merav Levi, RD, MS, CDN To: rd-usa@...: hgreuling@...: Wed, 10 Dec 2008 20:06:34 +0000Subject: RE: Oprah and her weight I think the RD from AZ should go break the door down, it sounds from her email that she has the right stuff. Guest guest
Holly, How I've chuckled with this email. I made up my mind long ago (of course by then I had aged a lot) that I would specialize in the things I love the most in my profession, and not the others, although still made an effort to stay as current as possible in the others. Therefore, I am still working and thriving in my work, doing what I love to do the most. And my enthusiasm is contageous bc if I'm having fun nobody is going to feel right about complaining about their jobs around me. Digna PS _ weight management and eating disorders are not my favorite or within my areas of expertise either. I'm trully a foodie and management person. Oprah and her weight Sorry for the cross posting but I thought this was important: _http://www.msnbc. <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28139107_> msn.com/id/28139107_ (http://www.msnbc. <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28139107> msn.com/id/28139107) As if I needed to be told in an article that Oprah is fat again.
