(Address: Division of Psychiatry, Ministry of Health Be'er Sheva Mental Health Center, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Be'er-Sheva, Israel). Summary: In a study involving 89 schizophrenic inpatients - 40 with tardive dyskinesia (TD) (22 men, 18 women), and 49 without any symptoms of motor disturbances (30 men, 19 women) - plasma pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) levels - an indicator of vitamin B6 status - were found to be significantly lower in male schizoaffective patients with TD (12.4 nM), as compared to male patients without TD (29.0 nM). These results suggest that vitamin B6 " may ameliorate different drug-induced movement disorders, including tardive dyskinesia (TD). " Additional research is warranted. -- ne Holden, MS, RD " Ask the Parkinson Dietitian " http://www.parkinson.org/ " Eat well, stay well with Parkinson's disease " " Parkinson's disease: Guidelines for Medical Nutrition Therapy " http://www.nutritionucanlivewith.com/
