I have endometriosis and after having my daughter, the combo of that and all my other autoimmune problems made it impossible for me to get pregnant again. I had her at 28. For me, I got MUCH better while pregnant. I had to take prednisone a couple of times, but otherwise was med free for the pregnancy. You might be one of the lucky ones who gets better. the Wanderer On the road in an ancient RV and also living in a (GASP) apartment in Florida http://wendyusuallywanders.wordpress.com/ You give but little when you give of your possessions. Guest guest
Hi Destiny and welcome. The topic of pregnancy comes up a lot on this board and it's a great source of info and support. Presently there are at least 3 of us who are pregnant. and I are both 19 weeks and doing well. I've been on Enbrel and prednisone through this pregnancy and hope to eventually stop the prednisone, but I'll never give up Enbrel. I *love* it and it's worked great for me. You mentioned you're on mtx. You might talk to an OB, but I think you want to d/c the mtx for more than 6 weeks prior to conception. It's class X which means it's an absolute no-no in pregnancy and you want your last dose to be as far removed from a baby as possible. You might have to shop around and find a rheum who is comfy managing women through pregnancy. It took me a few tries before I found one that had lots of experience with moms and babies. Don't give up hope for a family. I was first symptomatic in 1998 at age 28 but didn't get diagnosed until last year when I was 35. I have a 4 year old Star Wars fan and #2 is on the way in June. You can have RA and be a good mom, it just takes the right drug routine and supportive OBs and rheums. Kate F [ ] RA and pregancy I am 25 years old and was diagonsed three years ago with RA. I am engaged to a wonderful man for over four years and he has been my main support. We want to have kids later in life, we want to control RA first, but I am scared that I will not be off the meds long enough, I am taking Humira, Predisione, Folic Acid, Plaquneil, Methotrexate, to where I can have children without complications or harming the baby or if I will be in pain the whole time through the pregancy? Any suggests or experiences to help us out? We ask our doctor but all she says is that we need to be off for 6 weeks and then there may be pain or may not and then she changes the subject. And thanks for all the support through this rough time! Guest guest
You do not need to be off your medication. You WILL have to modify it. As Kathyn said, MTX is a no-no. They use MTX to medically induce abortion. In lower doses it is notorious for causing birth defects. Generally, from what I have read, doctors recommend being off of MTX 4 - 6 weeks before trying to conceive if you are a woman, and three months if you are a man. If you do get pregnant doctors can give you a medication that " flushes " the MTX out of your system but I don't know how much that reduces the chances of birth defect. Humira, as far as they can tell is safe during pregnancy, but there isn't enough information out there. You may need to increase your prednisone or add a temporary NSAID. Good Luck! Guest guest
Destiny, Like you, I was diagnosed w/ RA in my early twenties. My rheumy told me the same thing, that I would have to change my meds if I wanted to try to get pregnant. I think you just need to change and modify the doses of your meds. My husband knew I had RA before we got married and wanted to start a family...unfortunatly we are " challenged " in that department. My RA was not the problem at all. After much consideration, we are going to adopt. What I have heard is that when your pregnant, your RA goes into remission, but I couldn't tell you for sure. Best of luck to you. --- In , " hearttrapt " <hearttrapt@...> wrote: > > I am 25 years old and was diagonsed three years ago with RA. Guest guest
i'm pregnant with #2 right now. my advice would be to have your children as close together as possible so you can get back on meds as quickly as possible. actually, that was the advice of my rheumatologist and OB! i wouldn't rush to have children, but once you start, go ahead and wrap it up in a few years if you can. you can take prednisone throughout pregnancy and azulfadine until 36th week. i took plaquenil before i got off the pill and had a very healthy baby. i took methotrexate for a few months and stopped for a year before trying to get pregnant. don't know about humira. > > I am 25 years old and was diagonsed three years ago with RA. Guest guest
oh yea, i forgot to mention that i only go into remission after the 1st four months. actually, the first few months of each pregnancy brought on the worst RA symptoms i have had in the history of my disease! most women do NOT have that experience though. i think it's like 85% have full remission throughout pregnancy. be optimistic! > > > > I am 25 years old and was diagonsed three years ago with RA. Guest guest
Hi, I'm currently trying for my first baby and i had to come off the sulphasalzine, plaquenil, humira and mtx for 3 months before trying to concieve, however i am in the UK and the rules may be different here. I am currently only getting 10mg prednisole and co-codamol daily to manage with the odd high dose steriod jab to keep me ticking along. I have suffered quite bad and am so now. Have a rheumy appoint on monday where i hope they will give me a new jab, however i had to have emergency surgery over christmas for an abcess so am stuck with a large wound, and of course steriods slow sown the healing processs so i have a feeling it will be a no-no! I hope things go well for you, i am 30 yrs old and so wish we had started trying earlier! go for it! fingers crossed for you x Peek <wendyhollander@...> wrote: oh yea, i forgot to mention that i only go into remission after the 1st four months. actually, the first few months of each pregnancy brought on the worst RA symptoms i have had in the history of my disease! most women do NOT have that experience though. i think it's like 85% have full remission throughout pregnancy. be optimistic! > > > > I am 25 years old and was diagonsed three years ago with RA. Guest guest
, I am glad you were able to have your daughter. Like yourself, I have RA and endometriosis along w/ some other uterine problems which prevents me from getting pregnant. My husband lost one his testicles as a child and remaining testicle barely survived, so he has an extremly low sperm count. The worst two people to try to have a baby ended up together. I am notbroken hearted about it; there are alot of kids who need good homes who are in foster care and we are willing to share our home. We did a short term foster care to see if we can handle being parents and we loved every minute of it. We loved that little boy and it was hard to give him back. Destiny, If you want to wait to have kids until you get your RA under control that is OK. What I have been told many times by friends of mine who already have children...you will never be fully ready and you will never have enough money; so just have them, you will be ready when they are born. Luckily, today women can have children later in life and have healthy pregancies. Do what is best for you. > > > We want to have kids later in life, we want to control RA > > > first, but I am scared that I will not be off the meds long enough > > > > Don't wait too long. Guest guest
Remember that the remission deals with pain due to inflammation. If you have severe destruction of your joints (I am in that boat) that pregnancy remission will not help that, in fact, the loss of padding from the edema may make it worse. That would be my luck!
