Hi Pam,

Welcome to the list.

A myo is a myomectomy--the gyn surgically removes the fibroids.

there are a number of different kinds of myo. hysteroscopic

resection is where they enter thru the cervix to remove small

submucosal fibroids--often the culprits behind heavy bleeding.

Abdominal myo also called a lap myo is where an incision is

made--usually horizontally, called a bikini cut--and the fibroids

are removed. this is usually for subserosal and intramural

fibroids. Laparoscopic myo is done thru small incision(s) less

than 1 " and the fibroid is cut up and brought out--usually only an

option for small subserosal fibroids. Fertility can be maintained

depending on various individual factors.

Hysterectomy, they remove all or part of the uterus. they may also

remove all or part of the ovaries and/or cervix. Fertility is not

maintained. HRT therapy may become necessary if the ovaries

are no longer functioning.

All treatment options (myo, hyst, UAE, etc.) for uterine fibroids are

dependant on symptoms, type, size, and location of fibroids.

Accurate diagnosing and a gyn with fibroid knowledge become

crucial in helping to determine what treatment option(s) to

pursue. On this particular list, you'll notice alot of different

approaches to treatment but we basically all have the same

starting point: fibroids.

You might want to check out the NUFF site for more information

as well as the many resources in Bookmarks and Database on

the yahoo groups home page for this list.. you can also search

the uterinefibroids archives if there is a particular topic you want

to learn more about.

cysts on each ovary and several fibroids in my uterus and my

my doctor never said I had fibroids. I have always taken the pill

for years because it helps the heavy periods. Does the pill shrink

the fibroids? or just help with the symptoms? What is the myo I

Pam,

Welcome to the group. A myo is a " myomectomy. " It's surgery that removes

fibroid tumors but leaves the uterus intact. A sugeon cuts the tumors out of

the uterus and repairs the uterus. If you wish to keep your uterus, this is a

good option.

Concerning the pill, a lot of people indicate it may help fibroids grow.

Personally, I think it does, although the verdict is out on that. It could

also be that certain types of the pill are more likely to make them grow.

Unfortunately, there hasn't been enough research to answer that definitively.

I went off the pill two years ago, and had no further fibroid growth after

that, although I had to endure more painful and longer periods since the pill

was helping with those hormonal problems.

Anyway, this group has tons of archive information regarding treatment

options such as UAE (uterine artery embolization), myomectomy, and there is

also a lot of discussion about hysterectomy (mostly the risks or problems

with it). Best of luck,

Pam:

As far as I understand this, there is not enough empirical information to

support the statement that the pill makes fibroids grow. Sometimes it does and

sometimes it doesn't. There is however some empirical support for the fact that

the pill helps relieve heavy periods. A number of gyns I have consulted so far

have suggested hysterectomy but I am 41and not ready for it yet. You should

really get 3 or 4 opinions from different gyns and reproductive

endocrinologists.

Hi Pam,

I've had ovarian cysts for the past 18 years and I

know they can be scary and cause some pretty serious

pain. I had one removed when I was 21 that was the

size of a grapefruit. Please be sure you keep an eye

on these, especially if they cause pain, because my

ovary was so crushed by the large cyst that they had

to remove it. I had surgery last year to remove

another cyst, but my doc was able to save my remaining

ovary.

There is a lot of controversy about whether the Pill

causes fibroids to grow. I specifically asked my

doctor about this a few weeks ago. I'm on the Pill for

birth control and also to help reduce the incidence of

ovarian cysts, but I was concerned that it is making

my fibroids grow. She said that the Pill does not have

any effect on fibroids - it doesn't make them shrink,

and it doesn't make them grow. They use it only to

control the sometimes-heavy bleeding associated with

fibroids.

I was off the Pill for more than a year after I was

diagnosed with fibroids, and in my experience they

grew just as much during that time as they have when

I'm on the Pill. In my personal experience it didn't

make a noticeable difference either way.

Even if you don't plan on having more children, having

a hysterectomy is not something to undertake without a

lot of research and several different medical

opinions. It is usually not considered absolutely

medically necessary unless you have cancer, but

OB/GYNs recommend it all the time because it is fairly

simple to perform relative to myomectomy. Some women

have them and are completely happy with that choice,

but hysterectomy can also cause immediate menopause,

diminished sexual function, and many other things - so

please think about whether you're ready to deal with

those possibilities. What did your doctor recommend

after your ultrasound?

Cat,

Thanks for writing back, my doctor recommended going on the pill to get rid of

the cysts and to see if it would help the heavy bleeding from the fibroids. She

also said she would try hormone therapy before considering surgery. This all

sounds okay with me. I guess at this point will just watch and see if they grow,

plus hopefully the cysts will go away on their on. Pam

on these, especially if they cause pain, because my

ovary was so crushed by the large cyst that they had

to remove it. I had surgery last year to remove

another cyst, but my doc was able to save my remaining

ovary.

There is a lot of controversy about whether the Pill

causes fibroids to grow. I specifically asked my

doctor about this a few weeks ago. I'm on the Pill for

birth control and also to help reduce the incidence of

ovarian cysts, but I was concerned that it is making

my fibroids grow. She said that the Pill does not have

any effect on fibroids - it doesn't make them shrink,

and it doesn't make them grow. They use it only to

control the sometimes-heavy bleeding associated with

fibroids.

I was off the Pill for more than a year after I was

diagnosed with fibroids, and in my experience they

grew just as much during that time as they have when

I'm on the Pill. In my personal experience it didn't

make a noticeable difference either way.

Even if you don't plan on having more children, having

a hysterectomy is not something to undertake without a

lot of research and several different medical

opinions. It is usually not considered absolutely

medically necessary unless you have cancer, but

OB/GYNs recommend it all the time because it is fairly

simple to perform relative to myomectomy. Some women

have them and are completely happy with that choice,

but hysterectomy can also cause immediate menopause,

diminished sexual function, and many other things - so

please think about whether you're ready to deal with

those possibilities. What did your doctor recommend

after your ultrasound?

>>Those of us with long histories with lots of docs have a little system we

Excellent advice! I subscribe to Medic-Alert... costs $20/year, my bracelet

has my id # on it, and any emergency provider can have access to all my

allergies, meds, and conditions by one phone call. My husband carries this

information also, and I always make sure that someone at work has the info

in case something should happen to me at work.

I keep a " task " in my Outlook for each of my doctors, marked " prep for

allergist " etc. Then, as something takes place in my life that I will want

to mention to that doctor at my next visit, I make a note in that " task " .

The day before each appointment, I review that info, refine it a little,

make complete sentences/formulate questions, and take it with me.

We each have to be proactive about our medical care. Several years ago, I

became jaundiced and didn't have a doctor who truly followed up as he

should--and we were living in a large metro area at the time. ly I

felt that the whole incident went generally untreated. Now, knowing about

the SLE and Sjogren's, I understand the role this might have played in

diagnosis, etc.
