As a Registered Dietitian, I appreciate that all foods can fit, and that a little bit of real butter and cheese is better than a lot of the fake stuff. But as a food professional, I was appalled and sickened watching a constantly LICK her fingers as she was filling the pasta shells with her cheese mixture. Yes, she was LICKING her fingers then picking up another pasta shell. I know this is a regular habit of hers, but this is NOT her personal kitchen. She is setting an example for others. This is a huge food borne illness risk and has no place in professional cooking whether there is going to be adequate heat in the cooking process or not. In the future, please provide Ms Deen with an appropriate hand washing sink and towel, and tasting spoons, so she may demonstrate safe food handling skills. Guest guest
Holly, I notice that most of the chefs and cooks on the shows make it such a point of washing their hands after handling chicken and also at times other meats. I think that if we write to them about foodhandling especially in this age of viruses that pop up and spread like lightning, one or another producer may get the hint and take action. I admire that you have taken the first step! And thank you so much for sharing this letter with us. I will follow suit if you don't mind my taking some words right out of your letter. Now, I may also do the same with another show. Guy's Bites has been one of my favorites - I watch almost all the men on Sat or Sun when I'm home, and watched him win the contest a couple of years ago and survive the first year as a foodshow host. But his Diners.......... whatever it is on the road show, is disgusting when he starts to gobble up food like a glutton in front of the cameras, and this weekend I almost lost it when he was holding up some kind of sandwich thing with the sauce dripping from his hand onto his arm, and laughing about it. I have sworn off that one show just bc of the disgust factor. So maybe I'll write to that one too.... Thanks for sharing your proactive actions with all of us.
