Prednisone weakens your bones, thins your skin, makes yor tummy round , your

face round, and makesyou hairy. These are the only one I can remember. If you

type it in on the internet you can get all side effects.

Increases your appetite too over what everyone else has said, can make you

grumpy too !

Prednisone..... I have been on it for over six years, yes it did make me feel

better, I also went from 145 pounds to 210, rounded out all over. Finally caused

an adrenaline problem, now I have to take a Beta Blocker becasue my blood pumps

through the heart to quick. I regret taking this drug it really messed me up and

I am only 48. Jean

I am so sorry to hear about what you went through. My doctor has told me flat

out that I will not be on steroids an extended period of time because they do

more harm than good. But dang.... Those 3 weeks of being at 60mg, 50 mg, and 40

mg.... I did more in those three weeks than I had in 3 years!!!!!!!!

really? wow i didn't know that it could do that. i think it's time to

look up the side effects. i used to take it but i never any problems

I think prednisone is often a necessary drug for us, at least for a period of

time. Try not to get freaked out about side effects if you're taking 10mg or

less for a circumscribed amount of time. I've been on 5mg or less for about a

year, and my rheum says it's really fine. Your body naturally makes about 11mg

of prednisone daily on its own. Taking a few extra miligrams isn't thought to

be super harmful. Remember that unchecked inflammation isn't great for us

either. RA patients seem to die from heart disease which is likely linked to

inflammation, so doing all we can do to stamp down symptoms is very important.

I hope to get off the prednisone eventually, but until that day comes, I can't

psych myself out about bones, weight gain etc. Oh, and I haven't gained that

much being on low doses, maybe 2 or 3 pounds at the most.

thanks i needed that. i think i have been driving myself nuts about

the sideeffects but i feel great now. hell i can dance, run, jump;

it's amazing. i'm thinking of going to the gym so i can build up a

little muscle because i really lost all that i had. there was about

two years where i didn't suffer from flare ups and just had minor

pains. mostly stiffness and it went away after about an hour so i

started lifting weights and it made me feel good about myself and i

want to get back up to that point. my doctor recommended me doing

light weight when i had some stiffness. on days where i have alot of

stiffness i find that if i go to the gym i feel alot better

I think that as long as you know of the possibility your appetite will

increase, you should be able to control it. I gained about 10% of my body

weight partly because I couldn't move around as I was used to (house-bound).

Now, after taking Prednisone for almost 19 years, my weight is back down to

less than I weighed at any time in my adult life. My opinion is that of

others on the board, Prednisone is worth the 'possible' side effects and

I'll keep taking it as long as I can to have a better quality of life.

That's such a good point about the Calcium plus Vitamin D, Pris. I got lazy

about mine and skipped a few days. Then I read that pregnant women who take

extra calcium have lower risks of having kids with asthma. My husband and son

both have asthma, so that plus the RA is more incentive to get serious about

calcium + D during this pregnancy and beyond.
