Guest guest
Elsa: ABA - Applied Behavioral Analysis is a behavior modification program that teaches your child how to follow direction, be compliant, learn information - it's a great way to launch a young child with autism. There are schools in south Florida that are using this teaching method. Otherwise, you can hire a private therapist say from Reaching Potentials or find one on your own. You might also be interested in Verbal Language - another behavioral program with the emphasis on functional speech. Verbal language has a great assessment tool called ABLES which gives the therapist a protocol to work with so the child's progress can be assessed. The Victory School teaches Verbal Language and that's in Ft. Lauderdale. But your child is young enough for you to start a home program. The children make great progress in a short period of time. However, if you financially cannot do both your biomedical program and behavioral keep doing the biomedical and see if you can get Medwaiver because this does offer assistance for behavioral therapies. Guest guest
Elsa, Please call me if like...and I will do my best to explain Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). You can reach me at . My son was diagnosed last year at age 4 and has been receiving a modified version of ABA. We try to give him 18-20 hours a week, but it is very costly. Guest guest
I certainly do not want to make any speech therapists mad b/c I truly believe they are great at what they do. And, this is our experience...And of course just our opinion. After my son was diagnosed at 30 months, we did the Early Steps program, which included driving all over the place for services. Not so great services now that I have some more experience. At some point within a month, we were connected with a BCBA who came to our house, trained us in ABA/VB and provided supervision. We also had someone come twice per week to provide some 1:1 with our son in his natural environment. Between the two therapies, I would pick ABA/VB over speech ANY day and I recommend it for any child who is not yet talking or using some type of augmentative communication (signs, pictures, tango, etc.). The verbal behavior program is based on at least 50 years of aba research demonstrating efficacy in teaching language to children with autism and other disabilities. The simplest issue of identifying the motivator to get the child to use words is huge and having an understanding of behavior. I can recall hearing the speech therapist tell my son, "Just one more." or "Do this first, then you get the ball pit." He would comply and she would try to add more. She just did not seem to have a grasp of behavior modification/shaping. He eventually did not trust her. I do realize there are many great speech therapists and many have a great understanding of behavior. Again, this is my experience and my opinion. But if the goal is to get the child communicating, I strongly, strongly recommend someone trained in Verbal Behavior. A BCBA can also train the family and anyone who is involved with the kid so learning opportunities are everywhere for that child. ABA/VB is probably the absolute best intervention we have done with my son. therapies Hi < I have my son in 3 hours speech therapy a week, 2 hurs oT, but i would like to know the difference with ABA, i Heard a lot of people talking about ABA but no ne explain me about this program , my son is 3 years old, and he is in biomedical treatment also. thanks. elsa
Guest guest
Elsa I hope this helps Luciana www.bodymedonline.com ABA-Applied Behavior Analysis - is a system of autism treatment based on behaviorist theories that state that behaviors can be taught through a system of rewards and consequences. www.lovaas.com Applied - principles applied to socially significant behavior Behavioral - based on scientific principles of behavior Analysis - progress is measured and interventions modifier Starts with " discrete trials " therapy; if the child complies, he is given a " reinforcer " or reward in the form of a tiny food treat, a high five, or any other reward that means something to the child; if the child does not comply, he does not receive the reward, and the trial is repeated. Guest guest
ABA/VB therapy facilitated my son's language and I will always say that the behavioral therapy is what got him to speak. The Speech Therapists helped to develop clear articiulation and identified oral motor issues that needed to be addressed....using both to compliment each other is the way to go if you can do both....if you have to choose ...look at the level of language and if it is absent or very fundamental I would opt first for ABA/VB. Just my opinion... --------- therapies Hi < I have my son in 3 hours speech therapy a week, 2 hurs oT, but i would like to know the difference with ABA, i Heard a lot of people talking about ABA but no ne explain me about this program , my son is 3 years old, and he is in biomedical treatment also. thanks. elsa
