Guest guest
Sounds like a great idea! Not many people understand this illness, I know when I was diagnosed I had no idea what it was and neither did my family or friends. It would be great to raise awareness to help people understand and/or want to know more about it. susanraeburdick <susanraeburdick@...> wrote: Does anyone know of a campaign to get an awareness ribbon for Rheumatoid Arthritis? Guest guest
As for color, I would definately want a seperate color from any ribbon that represents arthritis 'in general'. There is so much ignorance regarding RA. I know many here, when saying they have RA, have been met with comments like, " Oh yeah, my Grandma had a touch of that when she was 89. " Sheesh. I would hope the ribbon would be different and provide the opportunity for us to educate that RA is a much different illness that the 'wear & tear' osteo that most everyone experiences as they age. I have a bracelet I purchased on ebay that has dark ribbon charms hanging down from it and has blue beads and crystals on it as well. Guest guest
Suz, I completely agree w/ you. I have heard that I am too young to be in this much pain, I am too young to have arthritis, you don't look " sick " . I am the only person in my family w/ RA...so my family doesn't understand the difference between OA and RA. They beleive that it's all in my mind and if I didn't want to be in pain, I have to " think " that there is nothing wrong w/ me and " poof " everything will be OK. My husband is great, he's the only one in my family who understands what is going on. I have a good friend w/ lupus so we lean on eachother. It's just reassuring to know that you are not the only one. This support group as been great for me, it makes me feel like I am not the only one dealing w/ RA/fibromyalgia. I have a navy blue wristband...I wore it because it was a New York Yankees wristband, but now it has a double meaning. > > Cheryl, i absolutely agree. RA is a completely different animal and so misunderstood. Yesterday someone commented to me (and I hadn't heard this in a while)... " oh, you are too young to have arthritis " ... i'm sure many of us can not count the times people have ignorantly said this. > Suz > > > > > ______________________________________________________________________ ______________ > Never miss a thing. Guest guest
<<When I told my department at work what I had been diagnosed with, RA, one person said.... " I'm glad it's nothing serious " .>> I have to put up with that SAME mentality from my family! Oh, everyone gets arthritis eventually, they say. You just live with it. Yeah, your bones are deteriorating and you are just " going through a stage " ? You can barely get yourself out of bed some mornings to go to the bathroom, and it's JUST arthritis. Add to the RA a case of Fibromyalgia and depression and just living with it is NOT an option. I wish I could make people feel the way I feel for ONE day. They might not feel like they could just " live with it " . Blessings, Lou ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ " Fact: 3 out of 5 people aren't the other 2. Guest guest
I do like your RA - more than arthritis idea but we have to remember 'arthritis' includes over 100 types of rheumatic conditions besides RA and osteo -- lupus, fibro, Hashimoto's scholderma, etc -- that all have some symptoms similar to RA. There is a great website called Cafe Press. (www.cafepress.com) This site has individual shops that target different issues/opinions/etc. There are some great shops for arthritis tees/bumper stickers and the like. One of my favorite shops is Kari's Creations: http://www.cafepress.com/kariscreations/3427968. Some of her items for RA do slant political (such as " RA is the war we need to be fighting. " ) but she has RA so she is more emotionally involved. I have the tee that says " No, I'm not too young to have arthritis!
