Guest guest
Hello everyone, If you are finding that you are encountering more psych meds in your practice, you're not imagining it. Psych meds are being used for an increasing number of off-label uses, and they affect hormones, appetite, and weight in some pretty significant ways. I post a few items on my psych drug blog each week, but if you would like a comprehensive resource, I've got a great CD for you. I started doing this because I discovered that the PDR does not always have this information. A pharmacist from Mayo once told me the PDR is essentially paid advertising, and the information you get from it is heavily screened by attorneys before it's printed. My CD gets the information straight from Pub Med. It's organized in a series of fact sheets that you can print out and send to physicians, including references, if you need to make a case regarding a specific medication. I'm closing in on turning out the 2009 version, which I'll have to offer at an increased price (10% higher). If you'd like to have the 2008 version, it is available until December 31 for the current price. For more information on the medications and natural options that are summarized, and a sample page, please visit http://afterthediet.com/psychosample.htm This is the direct link to order http://yhst-34497545168533.us-dc1-edit.store.yahoo.net/RT/NEWEDIT.yhst-344975451\ 68533/fba70d45ea86/publications.html It's become somewhat of a niche to work with patients whose meds have backed them into a corner with regards to weight and appetite, and I've collected as much information as I could as I've gone along trying to capture it in a practical fashion. As I mentioned in an earlier email, I believe mental health/psychiatry/neurology is wide open as a place for dietitians to establish themselves--if they're willing to learn the details, operate from an evidence-based perspective, and step up.
