Guest guest
, I had a total knee replacement June 22 of this year and it truly was the BEST thing possible for me. I can run....well....jog, but still it is more than I have done for YEARS! I have, however, been in remission for one year now, and have not been on any meds for my liver during that time. I see the doctor next week, so we will discuss the options that are out there for me. There are truly times that I think that I need to be back on the 6MP because of all of the other autoimmune problems that I have. I believe the 6MP helps keep them in check, but that is something that I will discuss with the doctor. The BEST thing about the knee replacement, is that I have been able to be MUCH MORE active than ever before and have, as of this AM, lost 101 pounds. I lost 1/2 of it the past two years, but since the knee replacement, I have lost the rest. For me, the knee replacement was the VERY best thing! I wish you well! Debby [ ] Knee joint replacement Hi I have had AIH since 1996. I have been taking Prednisone for since then, Currently I am taking 10 mg. Throughout the years I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroid, Crohn's, Type 11 Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, and OA. I have also gained 80+kg which is approx. 150 lbs.! Yesterday I met with an orthopedic surgeon who said I require a total knee joint replacement. He said I have two options, now or alter. He believes that the prolonged use of steroids ahs been the contributing factor. Just recently I was placed on Cellcept as an alternative to the prednisone; it may take over 6 months to wean me off the steroids, if Cellcept works it will cost approximately $800.00 a month. Cellcept is an immune suppressant given to transplant patients however it has had success with AIH. Regardless of the cost, I would like the new drug to work so I may get off the steroids. Although it is a wonder drug, Prednisone also has side effects. My query is has any one in this group had a knee joint replacement; I would love to hear about it and the outcome and rehab, plans. But wondered how I may manage both my work schedule and pain after the surgery (knee joint replacement) Thank you for reading my email AIH 96' Waterloo Ont Canada
Guest guest
Hi Debby Thank your for your reply You have lost that much weight Great Job Well Done I keep thinking I will just keep growing bigger and bigger. I really do hope the Cellcept works for me and I can reduce the Prednisone, maybe then I can start to lose weight. Do you believe the steroids damaged your knee? You mention that you have other Immune disorders, I too. It seems that if you have one you are predisposed to any other. I am not sure whether there is a familial factor, have you ever heard of families having immune disorders Regards, Folger This email message (including attachments, if any) is intended for the use of the individual or entity to which it is addressed and may contain information that is privileged, proprietary, confidential and exempt from disclosure. Guest guest
, my family has many autoimmune diseases. What I think is interesting, is that vitaligo runs in both my Mother and Father's family. My Mom lost all of her uncles and aunts through one kind of cancer or other. It was very sad. Mom died of a rare breast cancer., As for the prednisone being a factor to my knee, I don't believe so....I have been bone on bone for many many years. My ortho would not give me the knee replacement until I was 55.....finally made it! LOL.....but I am so glad I had it done. It truly has made a big difference in my life! Guest guest
Hi Pat: I am 56 years old and had a total knee replacement on my right knee in September and I think it is great. My dr felt that it is better to do it now instead of waiting. The rehab is much easier when you are younger. I think I had a great dr and great recovery. Feel free to email me privately if you would like more details on the surgery and/or recovery. Good luck Pat in Southern Oregon [ ] knee joint replacement After just having a finger fusion and a thumb arthroplasty, I have been told that I now need a knee replacement. I am 58 years old and the orthopedic surgeon says that they do not like replacing knees in people younger than 70. Needless to say, I am frustrated and anxious about all of this. Does anyone have any suggestions on the knee surgery and the timing of it? I am beginning to feel that I will soon be bionic! Thanks for the help! Guest guest
Hi Pat, I'm so sorry and I feel your pain. I just had two hips replaced myself at the age of 45. But that was due to OA supposedly. Now I have RA, just really got going since the surgery. About the knees. My advice is don't wait. I waited way too long to fix my hips and regret it. If the knee is really shot, an ortho should be willing to fix it. I've met people much younger than you with knee replacements. So sorry you need yet another surgery. > > After just having a finger fusion and a thumb arthroplasty, I have been told that I now need a > knee replacement. Guest guest
I've had the opportunity to talk to a few men with new knees, and they all said they were discouraged from having the surgery until they are 'retired' and won't move around like a younger person. I think it has to do with their fear of not doing a good job or the joint isn't going to last. One of the men was a 70 year old cattleman and ruined his replacement knee lifting a bale of hay. There's a maximum weight requirement on the joints, so i've heard. I don't know what I'd do if I needed a knee replaced.... Guest guest
, Thanks so much for this advice! I saw a second doctor today and what a difference! The recommendation is still joint replacement but with such optimism and encouragement. I will probably schedule the surgery for July immediately after my son's wedding. I feel so hopeful! What a gift this group and you are!! Guest guest
Pat, I had my left knee replaced in Oct of 2006. I was 47. Both knees had to be replaced so they picked one..It was the best thing i ever did. All I can say is Therapy therapy therapy..Keep it moving or it will start to stiffen just like a real one..I will tell you for me it was very painful at first, but it was sooo much worth every bit of pain...I was planning on getting the other done after 3 months but had to get my left ankle and foot done..So this year is the year for the right...I had my surgery in Baltimore, MD Good Luck.. Guest guest
I Pat. Knee replacement surgery, and hip replacement surgery, have come along way. You are young for the joint replacement, but if you are having an untrollable amount of pain and other symptoms, then the benefit would seem to our weigh the risks. Another option would be to find an orthopedist that can do the minimumly invasive surgery. They can do this on both knees and hips thus allowing faster recovery time and fewer limitations. Artificial joints do last longer than they used to. I hope this helps a little bit...Marina > > > > After just having a finger fusion and a thumb arthroplasty, I have > been told that I now need a > > knee replacement. Pat In response to this " surgeon " and in the words of my great friend : " what a load of crap " . I had mine replaced at age 46. In the year prior I hobbled/limped around like a pegleg pirate. Gained 30 pounds. A year after my replacement I was walking 3 miles and lost all the weight. Find a " real " surgeon. This one is obviously way out of the loop. Guest guest
I had my knee replaced in November 2006. I was 49 at the time. It was the very best thing I ever did. My joint was so bad it was bone rubbing on bone. I was in a wheelchair 4 months before the surgery. The doctor I saw also didn't want to do the surgery, saying I was too young. After seeing my agony for so many months, he decided to go ahead with the surgery. I'm glad he did, but I was at the point of desperation! Find a doctor who will help you!
