Your dependent children should.... its the next step after your awarded. All

you need is their birth certifs. Get those now while your waiting if you

don't already have them. They will also want to know annually what you spent

the money issued to your children on... For some reason they ask. My worker

told me, to save dental bills etc as my kid needs braces at 5,000 I don't

have to worry about keeping a whole heck of a lot of info like clothing,

food, etc....

My son will be gettin about half of what I was awarded.

Jen

P.S. its a long process but certainly worth it....as medicare take two years

to kick in after your awarded SSDI.

No taxes are withheld, but you do have to file a tax return and depending on other income, the benefits could be taxable.

Hedi, No they dont if you make collectivly under 30,000 in your household in a year. I have been on it 5 years, (due to Lupus too) This year we won't make that, in years past we made more than 30,000 but were not taxed to bad, I dont think we have owed for awhile.

Jen, I still owe on my Student Loan, and they have not attached it to my SSDI, They dfo however attach what we would get back at tax time, so we file an ingured spouse, so they only take a little at a time. Im not an account but my dad is, so I know a little bit about this. lol

any more questions just ask, if I don't know Ill ask my dad :-)

Hi, You know somthing you have to be careful with that. Mine were suposidly permenently defered 4 years ago, than I found out they werent. I suppose If i werent such a procrastinator I could get them defered again. I know my doctor will sign them. You see I tried working for a couple of months, I did ok at first, than about 1 1/2 months in I started getting pain in my right abdomen, went to the doctor, did blood test, found out I had AIH, on top of lupus. oh well, she dosnt want me working. But they do not attach your SSDI, they would have done that to me a long time ago. so dont worry ok, worry about your health ok.

if you have anymore questions just drop an email.

Thats what my concern was. My student loans are due.

I doubt I will ever be gainfully employed ever again to even consider paying

them off. Do student loan programs have a waiver or something available to

people who are disabled I wonder.... something to look into, I'm to afraid

to call them to ask :P

My credit? Your kidding me right?

Seriously, I my credit was blown out of the water decades ago on a daily

basis. Its the LEAST of my concerns as I could never repair it.

Its a good idea though to talk to the student loan folks for options though.

thanks, Jen

You can't lose by doing that, but don't hold your breath! <ggg> If you do have them write on your behalf, have them focus on your impairments, not just your conditions. Have them detail how your impairments are consistent with liver disease. Remember SSDI only cares about how impaired you are, not what conditions you have. Unless you are the lucky(?) few who meet the listed illnesses and their criteria, you will likely need to appeal to an administrative law judge before you'll be approved. So...don't get discouraged if you are turned down...

Hi Heidi,

It took 3 months for my decision. Medicare does not start until 2 years of coverage, including backpay. Medicare does not currently cover medications. If I remember correctly, your back pay will go back to your first day of eligibility, which is 9 months after you are disabled. In my case I got nearly 2 years of back pay.

I get SSDI and I don't get my meds paid forbut the medicare portion kicks in

two years later and I haven't investigated what that will cover as things

could change drastically in two years.

SSI has a medicaid portion to their package I think. Perhaps they cover

meds.

Back pay with SSDI is from the date of your disability. What did you put

down on your application? And of course there is the first 6 months that

they won't cover.

For example, I listed date of disability 6/23/00 (first esophogeal bleed)

and I was awarded 12/23/00 as the date my disability payments would begin.

Got my first check in January.

Heidi,

I receive SSDI and from my own experiences. I do not get any medical help

because they tell me I makew too much money on SSDI I only get 835.00 a

month. Out of that I have to pay all my living and food. I am on a discount

program at 2 hospitals where I pay co pays and that has drained me. My

medication is co pay of 10.00 per prescription provided by the hospital. I

have 15 medications I take every day adds up. I did not get my SSDI for 6

months waiting period ended. I had emergency liver transplant. I will however

get Medicare in September after waiting 2 years for that. I will continue to

stay on the hospital discount program because what I hear is we still get

raped of our benefits by the govment. You really have to search for things to

help you they won't give you the answers. I am still on my own quest for

financial help. Good luck and I hope you will hear soon.

I have not worked in 10+ years (I quit working to care for my aging parents,

then became sick myself). At this point, I don't believe that I could work. Does

anyone know if it would be possible to draw SSDI from a spouse?

I know it is available for a widow or widower under survivors benefits,

regardless of employment history.

Fortunately, my wonderful husband is still living but he's working five (and

often more) ten hour night shifts a week to support us. I just wondered if I

could give him a little relief by getting SSDI.
