Hi Deedee,

My rheumy had told me that humira and enbrel are safe to use for at

least the first trimester. But there is no research to determin the

effects on the baby during the second and third trimesters. I to am

about 8 weeks along and he put me on plaquenil sulfate. It isn't as

effective but it does provide some relief. You might ask your

rheumitoligist about it. Best of wishes to you and your baby.

Hi Dee Dee and congratulations!

I'm nearly 25 weeks and have been on Enbrel and low dose pred my whole

pregnancy. I have an OB with a background in internal medicine, a supportive

rheumatologist who has managed many pregnant RA pts, and a perinatologist who

was more concerned about my advanced age (36) than the Enbrel. When I went to

see him he actually quipped, " Oh, you're here b/c you're old. " I said, well,

no, not so much, I'm actually here b/c of the Enbrel. He said that his mother

takes Enbrel for RA and he thinks it's a very safe drug. He was more concerned

about my age than anything else - which was great to hear!

Baby is growing fine. I had a normal quad screen and a normal targeted

ultrasound. All docs say that there is no evidence that antiTNFs are safe in

pregnancy, but neither are there animal studies or human case reports that they

are dangerous, hence the class B rating.

You have to read the literature, talk to your docs, consider seeking multiple

opinions, and make the choices that fit best for you. I was absolutely

unwilling to give up the Enbrel. I do great on it and since I haven't had a

full remission, I still need it. I found a rheumatologist who would support my

choice and I enrolled in the OTIS studies. I did have to stop seeing one

rheumatologist who had zero experience with pregnant women and just told me to

be safe and stop the Enbrel. You know, the OTIS folks can advise you on what we

know about the safety of drugs in pregnancy. Their toll free number is

877-311-8972. Please consider participating in their research b/c if women like

us can contribute to the literature saying that antiTNFs are safe, it will make

things so much easier for women with RA who are trying to grow their families.

Very best wishes for a happy and healthy 9 mos,

Kate F

Hi everyone! I've always been able to get great advice from you all, I hate to

only post

when I need you..but here goes...

I am 8 1/2 weeks pregnant ( a bit of a surprise pregnancy)

I have seen my ob 3 times already and a perinatal specialist (my ob referred me

since i was

very uneasy about my meds i am taking and getting pregnant.)

I am taking Humira weekly and 6 mg of prednisone. I was taking plaquanil but

have

stopped since finding out of my pregnancy.

Here is my situation... .

My rheumatoligist requested that I stop taking the humira. both the specialist

and my ob

have said that with it being a catagory b that it is safe for the baby. I also

have read of

many pregnancies that have done fine with humira.

my last pregnancy, i was taking enbrel and (5 years ago) was taken off of it as

it was not

classified safe yet...I took high prednisone the entire pregnancy and don't

really want to do

that....

I am very confused on what to do about the humira. I do know that my rheumy is

quite

conservative and that may be the reason ( i have an office visit with him

tomorrow to

discuss) .

any advise or experience would very very very much be appreciated.

thanks

DeeDee
