I appreciate your input on Naltrexone, my hepatologist is starting me on 25 mg., if it doesn't work then will try Rimfadin. I haven't got mine filled yet as the pharmacist didn't have it available, he said he had never filled a presc. for that. I wanted to do some research on it before I had it filled. I came home and looked it up under Mayo, prescriptions and saw that it was used for alcoholics and drug addicts, I was kinda shocked at that as the Hep did not say what it was used for except that sometimes it did help with itching. I thought maybe he thought I was an alcoholic. Many people seem to think that is the only thing that causes liver problems but a Dr. shouldn't.

Anyway I will get it filled the first of the week and see how things go and will let you know. I will research the site you gave me.

Best Wishes

Martha,

Another site you may wish to read is

http://drkoray.hekim.net/pgc20.php3 - The Brain in Cholestasis by Nora

V. Bergasa. M.D.

Neither of the sites I have referenced was written for a

non-scientific audience, so be forewarned.

This latest site points out the evidence that PSC, and other diseases

that cause cholestasis, increase the natural opioids that the liver

produces. These extra opioids, like opiates administered to the

central nervous system, can cause itching which can be blocked by

opiate antagonists such as we are starting to use.

Taking these drugs does not mean that we are a alcohol or narcotic

addict. Our livers just out of balance and produce so much natural

narcotic that we can suffer withdrawal symptoms if we take too much

Naltrexone too soon. Made addicts by our own livers!

Martha, you don't have to look up drugs yourself. The pharmacist could

have handed you a simple to read printout or even a package insert.
