Hi Diane

We are in a similar boat, I am due to start on MTX end of month - I've

been on Plaquenil 60 days now with only partial relief.

A journal is a very good idea - your general/specific comfort/pains

and sleep are good ideas to journal, I would also add any activities

that you do only episodically. Also if your rheumy suggest other

interventions - diet, drug, rest, etc I would journal those also.

Good idea! And good luck on the MTX, hope it works for both of us. -

>

> At my rheumy visit on Monday my RD changed my medication from

sulphasalazine to 10 mg methotrexate and folic acid. The

sulphasalazine just made me feel like a toxic waste dump and didn't do

anything for my pain. I haven't started the methotrexate yet...it took

2 days for my pharmacy to get through to my insurance and then the

patient advisory said to avoid vaccinations and I'm due to get my flu

and pneumonia vaccine on Monday. I'm supposed to take the MTX once a

week and the folic acid on the other 6 days. My multivitamin also has

folic acid...should I also skip the vitamin on the MTX day? I don't

have to worry about pregnancy, but I do worry about taking this drug.

>

> I'm starting to keep a daily journal listing how I slept (generally

poorly), and how my day went and any aches and pains that need to be

noted. Is there anything else that I should monitor? Weather

conditions, food, activities?

My Rheumatologist told me to take my 5 mg of folic acid the day after my MTX

injection. She said that the MTX will deplete the folic acid, so it is better

to replace it the next day....

HI ,

I take my methotrexate on Thursdays and my folic acid is 1mg every day. I

started enbrel on Tuesday, no result yet. I think it is too soon too tell.

Currenlty I am experiencing a lovely swollen wrist by the joint there up to the

elbow to the pinky. Wonder how long it takes for the enbrel to kick in. The

shot was easy to give, burned going in. I had a headache all day and had a

little muscle stiffness in the neck and shoulder area. It all disappeared by

the end of the day and the next day I felt fine. Time will tell I guess.

This is a controversial issue, Jo.

Some researchers and rheumatologists believe that folic acid may

reduce the effectiveness of MTX, so they advise skipping the folic

acid on the day you take the MTX. Others advise taking the folic acid

every day because they believe the impact on MTX's effectiveness is

negligible.

Here again is a good example of a need to take liquid MTX by mouth or

injection. It changes the possible reactions to something that may be better

for you. I've been 'lucky?' in that there is no reaction even though I take

1.2cc each week, and been taking MTX for almost 20 years.

Hi Dennis,

Right now being on so many meds, I am very careful with how I do

things...I'm sensitive to so many. I don't think that I want to drink my mtx,

and as

far as the injectible, I have never mentioned it to my rheumy. Now that I am on

enbrel , if it is successful, there is a chance of decreasing the mtx...so

for now, inspite of it making me " fuzzy " ....it is still working for me. I am

interested though from everyone, doyou all find that you have less energy by

the time its time for your next dose of mtx? and the day after you are back

to a good , workable energy level? that is what happens to me.

HI Heidi, I see no energy level difference near the time when I take my mtx (I

take 4). Sometimes, I forget, go a day or two over and then my only sign is a

joint gets stiff, once I take it, the next day, back to my normal. Hope this

Hi Everyone,

I take four Methotrexate a week and 1 mg of Folic Acid everyday. My

doctor didn't say anything about not taking the Folic Acid on the day I

take the Mtx. The last two months I've noticed that I feel really tired

and wore out after I take the Mtx. I don't know why this just started

recently since I've been taking Mtx for about a year and a half. I

usually take it on Sunday. I work two days during the week and every

other weekend, 12 hour shifts. I took the Mtx on Sunday two weeks ago

while I was working and I had no energy at all and dragged along all

night long. I'm supposed to take it today and go to work tonight. I

think I'm going to wait until tomorrow to take it this week. Does it

hurt anything if you don't take it on the same day every week?

Heidi, the MTX doesn't have much of a taste to begin with, but I took it in

a glass of orange juice and never noticed it. I have been fortunate that I

haven't had any side effects from it except for the folic acid snafu from

the Rummy that I used for a while. And, it's less expensive, which is

important to me. I get 5 ea 2cc vials for about $30 before my insurance

co-pay. Right now I'm taking 2mg Folic Acid per day but have taken as much

as 5mg per day when we finally found out that the Rummy wasn't much of a

Rheumy. I don't know anything about the biologics since I'm doing so well

with MTX and Lodine and Prednisone.
