Take your methotrexate ONCE A WEEK as prescribed by your doctor. Tablets can be split up and taken at two times over a 24 hour period (i.e. take them with breakfast and dinner). Guest guest
Melynda, It's not that anything terrible will happen if you take methotrexate and folic acid on the same day. Some researchers and rheumatologists believe that folic acid may reduce the effectiveness of MTX, so they advise skipping the folic acid on the day you take the MTX. Others advise taking the folic acid every day because they believe the impact on MTX's effectiveness is negligible. Guest guest
I don't think your rheummy is necessarily wrong but each doc can vary in his treatment plan for his patients. Most of us are taking at least 1mg folic acid a day. Some of who are very folic acid depleted and are having serious side effect issues are taking up to 5mg per day plus leukovorin to help lessen the side effects. I would discuss this matter with your doctor. If you are not having any side effects then great. There is probably no need to change anything. But if you are having side effects then you may want to discuss a change in plan to lessen those side effects. ALL the rheummy's I have seen( I have seen plenty...and most were NOT good ones...and I have seen a few good ones) recommend folic acid to be taken EVERY day while on MTX. They also recommend a good multi-vitamin as well. Keep in mind that each one of us has different lifestyles and tolerance levels for pain and side effects. So that is why the treatment plan can vary from one person to another.
