Hello macey110@...,

In reference to your comment:

ð There's still some work to do on the cholesterol and

ð triglycerides, but I'm making progress.  The

ð cholesterol is being treated by diet alone.  The doctor

ð says I can try going without the glucophage, so if it

ð works I'll be off meds!

Awesome Christy,

I passed your details (not your name etc) on to someone who's eating too high

carb, and who needs to start looking at what he's eating...

he doesnt want to do insulin, is on a LOT of other oral hypoglycemic meds...

and still is running way high in glucose, as well as cholesterol and

triglycerides... he's trying to do it all wrong, ie low fat, but eating

carbs....

I sure wish we could get dr's to pay attenion, his dr recommeded low fat cuz

of his tri's and his cholesterol, and just more drugs for the diabetes....

Christy, you're doing fine -- and big congratulations! -- but do be aware

that even despite our best efforts diabetes does often progress. And if it

does...don't consider it a personal failure, just move on. As far as the ACE

to protect the kidneys, that's still a good idea even though you don't have

any blood pressure or kidney problems. I've seen articles on this -

unfortunately I don't have cites, maybe someone else does. Vicki

Christy that's really great news!! I would expect the cholesterol would

take longer to come in line. A definite improvement.

Excellent job!!

Congratulations on the great improvements Christy!

Just keep nibbling at it and you will get the remaining

borderline ones down.

Hope you make it off the Glucophage too.

Here's the rest of the story. My regular doctor called in sick

today, so one of her colleagues was filling in. The first thing she

did was ask me what medications I was on. I told her Glucophage 500

mg. once a day. She asked if I was taking aspirin. I said yes. She

then proceeded to tell me that they recommended that all their

diabetics be put on ace inhibitors, to help protect the kidneys and

keep the blood pressure under control. I pointed out to her that my

blood pressure was just fine, and always had been, and that I was

working very hard to get off medications, not to add more. She

didn't like that response, and got one of those disapproving looks on

her face. She said, " Well, your HgbA1c is showing improvement. Your

last one was 7.6. " I said, " Whoa! What's the date on that one? "

She said, " Oh, that was back in January. " I said, " What about the

one I had last week? " She then went and pulled it off the computer,

and got an amazed look on her face. She said, " It's 5.2. That's

normal! We should put it up on the bulletin board or something! " No

more talk about extra meds at that point, and that's when she looked

at my log and said I could try going off the glucophage. I really

think doctors are not used to highly motivated patients like the ones

on this list, and they don't know what to do with us. Meanwhile,

they keep pushing meds. Maybe I'm wrong, but by my way of figuring,

if I keep my BG at normal levels, which I have every intention of

doing, I don't need any drugs to protect my kidneys.

Vicki, thanks, I'll definitely look into that. I guess I just reacted

to what I felt was her knee-jerk reaction to prescribe more meds

without even looking at my chart or my labs first. I even asked

about getting the 24 hour urine test to see where my kidneys are at

present, and she said, " Oh, yeah, you haven't had that? " but still

didn't order it. I figured I'd wait until my regular doctor is back

and call her to discuss it. I also carry the baggage with me that

for the last few years of his life, my father's meds were causing as

many problems as they were helping, and he was taking more and more

meds, sometimes just to counteract the side effects of other meds.

And I know it's a progressive disease, and I'll take meds when and if

I need them, but don't want to take them unnecessarily. If I can't

maintain these good numbers over the long haul without the help of

meds or insulin, then I'll do whatever is necessary to maintain

them.

I've been saving some posts regarding this diet to print out and bring to my

Endo next visit.

Her reaction should prove interesting:-) She is very nice and will probably

be surprised at whatever my ???? (3 month test) results are.

Me too! I think this info is getting passed to the doctors because of

one study that was just done. If I am wrong, please correct me! This

study is being pushed to the doctors by the drug companies that make the

meds. Can you imagine the revenue if they can put every diabetic on

blood pressure meds, even when their blood pressure is normal?

If everyone on this list could see what taking the meds has done to me,

they would think twice. I won't take it until my blood pressure is high

and all natural methods have been exhausted. I agree with you!

I just finished a training session this week on disease management and

how to cut costs for insurance companies. I was so please to hear the

speaker say that the statistical evidence is now coming in that they put

you on a medication and that causes a side effect and then they put you

on another med to counter act that side effect and that meds has a side

effect etc.

I will never take another medication unless it is life and death. When

you quit taking the meds and your blood levels are better and you can

walk without pain, you just realize that something it not quite right

here.

I will try to research these studies tomorrow and see what drug company

did them and if they tested them with all the possible combinations of

other drugs. My friends that have high blood pressure have just lost

weight and gotten off their meds.
