Stiff Knees and super high RF

Hi,

I'm new this group. I am (was) and ultra-distance runner before I was

diagnosed with thyroid cancer on 12/22/07 and had my thyroid removed on

12/26. To go along with cancer I also had developed severe arthritis.

I had just completed a 100-mile endurance run a month before that. I

usually can recover from a long run in few days so it wasn't because of

that.

I was tested for RA and my RF>104, sed rate 90 and CCP >250. It was

painful just to walk around. Celebrex took the edge off but I still

had trouble sleeping. My doc put me on prednisone (5 mg twice a day)

and that has helped alot.

However, I still have stiff knees (feels like rubber bands) and the

bottom of my feet are numb. Anyone experience these kind of symptoms?

Tom

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the group. My name is and I am new here myself. It seems I've

been

suffering from seronegative RA. Tom, your labs do sound high indeed and I'm

sorry to

hear about your thyroid CA. I know that an elevated CRP can indicate

neoplasm/cancer.

Possibly it's still high from DEC?

Did you follow with any chemo? My friends have post-chemo arthalgias. If not,

I think

you need to see a rheumatologist. I had knee stiffness when the RA kicked up

and it

continues to this day. I can't sit on top of my legs on the floor. My knees

will not quite

bend all the way. I also have some neuro things like numbness of a toe etc..

So sorry to hear of your problems especially since you are an athlete. I'm sure

some

members will chime in with more experience. Let us know what you find out.

Hi Tom!

My knees became affected about 5 or 6 years ago. I

now take Plaquenil and Sulfasalazine but they are

still really bad. Sometimes I cannot walk. I still

have a lot of stiffness and it is hard to bend. The

pain level is finally down from a level 10 to about a

5 though so thats a good thing:)

Hi ,

Your knee stiffness and toe numbness sounds a lot like mine. Being a

runner I'm used to doing lots of stretches so I was thinking that

gentle stretching exercises might help. I believe my RF is still

high because my symptoms don't seem to have changed much. Is it

typical for RA to come and go in intensity?

What is seronegative RA? I haven't had any chemo. This type of

cancer don't use chemo but requires treatment with radioactive

iodine pills which I haven't had yet.

It was good to find this group because most people on the cancer

groups don't typically have RA.

Tom,

Seronegative RA is just a way of saying that it does not in bloodwork. 20% of

RA patirents

do not have a positive RA factor on labs.

You don't need this after just having your thyroid removed and radiation ahead!
