Glad you're with us, as I said.

Holy Mother! 450! 500 landed me in the hospital! I've heard of

individuals who had a bG level of 450 mg/dl (that's 25 mmol for those

outside the U.S.) and who didn't notice. But that sure wouldn't fly with

me! I don't wonder that she has had some sight problems. wow!

I realize that there may be some difficulty stabalizing her bG readings

and that her medical team (if such exists) may be afraid of

hypoglycemia. But boy, would I work on getting those bG readings down.

It might take a month or two and a fair amount of work on your

sister-in-law's part and some close observation by her medical team but

if she doesn't, she'll have a helluva time down the road. Her vision

problems are a warning sign. And I bet the people who market Depends are

making a mint from her!

But I'm probably preaching to the choir on this one and you probably

can't do much about it.

Hi and welcome!

We on list follow an approach called carb counting. You'll learn alot about it

while lurking or posting.

Basically, you keep your carbohydrates at a specific level for each meal, for

example 30, and test your sugar 2 hours past eating a meal and it should be 120

or less. Reason? If you keep a two hour post meal test of 120 or less 90% of the

time, your a1c will be close to 5.0.

Hi .

I've asked Harry, a list member, to email you his carbohydrate counting article.

It is great and explains all you need to know. I used to have sugars all over

the place and now run constantly 80 to 120 all the time.

Hopefully your friend will read the article as well and get her swings under

control.

Actually, I don't panic if it's 130 2 hours postprandial. But, as you

say, 90% of the time, it's right around 120 or less. HIghest I've had

since May -- and only once -- was 157.

Welcome aboard !

I'll bet your docdtor did not tell you about spiking your glucose levels

above 160. My doctor way back when did not tell me either. I forgive him

today, since it was not known at the time what caused most diabetic

complications at the time, but it is well known today by most people and

especially those who make it a point to treat diabetics. Even though all of

my A1C's were well below 6.0 back then, I felt I was doing just great, since

my doctor told me so. You will not have to worry about some of my diabetic

complications, but with good blood glucose management, you can probably

avoid all of them. Stick with us and we will show you how.

Once again, welcome aboard!

Wow! 450 to very low shows inconsistent care of oneself.she is either

getting bad advice or is not following the advice she has been given. No

wonder she is having eye sight problems. Even people who have not developed

diabetic retinopathy will have variations in their sight just due to the

blood sugar swings.

Hi, Mike,

Thank you for the welcome. I have a sister-in-law who was diagnosed this

year and she is both type I and type II. She is on an insulin regime and

from what I have heard has drastic swings from quite low to as high as 450.

They told her that if she stays within those levels it is okay for now. I

have not heard anything since a few months ago, but I know that for a while

she had problems with her sight.

I am looking forward from learning from the group and I will share my

experiences if anyone is interested.

Again, thank you for the welcome.

p.s. I am a RLF/ROP baby so have never had sight.

That makes a lot of sense. When I was given my diet and the exchange list,

I was told to have 45 carbs per meal and three snacks of fifteen carbs each.

I was also given a set number of fat grams to work with.

At one point, I was doing the Atkins diet. All my numbers were very good,

extremely low. I couldn't follow the diet more than three months because I

didn't want to do without fruit and a certain amount of bread. I usually

get the lite bread and it's not too bad.

She is being seen at Walter Medical Center as her husband is a former

colonel in the army. You'd think they know what they are doing, so it must

be something that is going on with her.

The highest reading I can recall ever having on my meter was somewhere in the

400s. I have knocked on the door of 400 several times, but I never recall being

in the 500 or above range. I don't doubt however that sometime in my diabetic

life I have been. Anyway, even when I've been in that 400 range I only remember

feeling some minor discomfort, but it certainly never seemed to be necessary to

go to the hospital. At the other end of the spectrum, I've been as low as 22

and functioning, although feeling pretty hypo. I was 26 once and only felt

minor symptoms, and I don't normally feel low until I am in the 50 range. All

this to say,, we're all so different.

Hi, ,

Thank you for the welcome. I have already learned some things and expect to

learn much more. I have created a folder of diabetic information so I can

keep track of all that I am learning.

I, too, am having a control problem which I am working on. Hopefully, I

will get back to where I should be soon.

Take care and I am looking forward to your postings on the list.
