Hi, ,

Thank you for the welcome. I have already learned some things and expect to

learn much more. I have created a folder of diabetic information so I can

keep track of all that I am learning.

I, too, am having a control problem which I am working on. Hopefully, I

will get back to where I should be soon.

Take care and I am looking forward to your postings on the list.

Hi darrell

Nice to meet you and welcome to the list. I've been type 1 diabetic for 30 years

and lost my eyesight from it.

I was classified as a brittle diabetic for 27 years and then I learned about

carbohydrate counting.

For the past 3 years, my a1c levels have been from 5.1 to 5.3 range via carb

counting. If you have not been instructed carbohydrate counting, stick around

and we can teach it to you.

We use it a lot on list and it is a very useful way of mastering your diabetes

and having near perfect blood sugar control.

again, welcome!

Regards,

Hi e. It's nice to meet you too. I have been a Diabetic for thirty one

years and have also lost my sight because of it. I am on Lantis and Novalog

insulin and do count carbohydrates. It works pretty well for me. I have been

countine carbs for about four years now. When I was first diagnosed with

Diabetes the doctors just didn't know enough to even tell me to take more

than one shot a day which wasn't good. Now that they have come out with new

insulin and carb counting I am doing a lot better. I appreciate you writing

and I'll talk to you soon. In Christ, Darrell

Hi Darrell.

Oh I am sure we can share the same stories with archaic forms of treatment.

*grin*.

Nice to have someone around on list that has been through the years of change.

There are others here on list in the same boat as us, unfortunately.

At least now we can manage the blasted thing!

Hi Darrell,

Good to see you on this list. I think you will find folks here very

By the way , what is the formula for the body mass index? I

thought it was your weight divided into your heighth in inches squared?

Cy,

The BMI body mass index can be computed from the following formula:

The main magic number is 709.

So multiply your present weight in pounds by 709 and divide this answer by

your height in inches. Now take the answer to this calculation and divide

it once again by your height in inches once again.

Now you have your BMI.

I ain't Harry, but ...

Seems to me the medicos want the BMI to be under 25; from 25 to 30 is

considered overweight and 30 and above is considered grossly overweight.

Personally, I think these guidelines are a bit stringent in that they

don't take account of muscle mass versus flab (as in not all

body-builders are thin) but that's the official line, anyway.

If you are a normal person, not a body builder or a well toned up athlete,

who have lots of muscles, then the ideal BMI is reported to be 25. Over 25

means one is over weight and below 25 means one is underweight. As a

practical consideration I would use 25 as being the ideal and would not get

too worried unless the variance from this figure is more than 10%. If the

BMI is 30 or more you got problems with being seriously fat, no matter who

you are. As an example of just using plain logic I present my data here:

Weight this morning 193 pounds

heitht 74 inches

BMI 24.99

One would think that looking at the above data that I am just about perfect,

but don't let that go to your head. I have the build of an ectomorph, long

tall and skinny, and I know I have at least ten pounds of fat on my body.

So I know for sure that I am overweight.

If you don't have a beer gut, then I'd say you're probably OK and that

" ten pounds of fat " may not be the chief source of your insulin

resistance and, therefore, may not be quite the problem the BMI freaks

would have it be. That's the sort of one-size-fits-all reasoning that

makes me uneasy with concepts such as the BMI.

Having said this, though, I do not deny that adipos fat seems to be

intimately associated with increased insulin resistance.

But I sometimes wonder if medical personnel will ever be happy until

all their patients are scarecrows!

Just one person's view.

The BMI is meant to be a general guide that fits most people. Before I ever

got this layer of fat in my abdomen, a beer gut, I already was insulin

resistant, even being skinny and a three time per week one mile swimmer. At

that time I had no beer gut and I only weighed 175 pounds, a BMI of 22.6,

and hardly an ounce of fat on my body. So without a doubt I can say that my

insulin resistance at the time was not caused by fat. It was simply caused

by me being a sugar addict.
