hi Barb and thanks for the welcome.

Well the only thing I really did was stop buying the food I knew I couldn't

have.

No sugar at all except for Pop Tarts which I use to raise my blood sugar

when needed.

I won't sit and snack on those.

And I eat a lot of vegetables and rice and pasta.

A lot of diabetics tell me that I shouldn't eat that much rice or pasta but

it doesn't seem to bother me because I eat very little of it.

I don't eat between meals any more.

I never bring food to the computer or eat in front of the tv unless it's

actually a meal.

I'm also trying to drink more water.

I know that helps too!

It was just making myself decide that I dind't want any more damage to my

body like other diabetics I know are going through right now.

I know two people on dialysis right now and it isn't looking good for one of

them.

Again, thanks for the welcome and I already love this list!

Billie, are you testing a lot, I hope? Have you done an hbA1c recently? If

you can eat rice and pasta, hurray for you! It spikes me much to high. It

sounds like you're following all the proper rules for where and when you

eat. I know this is important.

I'd suggest you look into glucose tablets, instead of poptarts. They are 4g

of glucose, and raise your bs on an average of 20 points. To me it's just a

more controlled way of recovering from a hypo.

I'm sure the others will chime in this evening. I am fortunate in that I

work at home, so check my email often.

Take care,

Wow Billie!! A type 1 with thirty years of neglecting your diabetes... and

the only complication you have is retinopathy? You are truly blessed... and

can be a wonderful blessing to this group. What have you done to bring your

levels under control in six months? Diet? Exercise? Insulin dosages? Pump?

What kind of support do you have? How long have you been blind? Did you

have time to prepare for it? Do you prepare your own meals?

Rita

Remember, a diamond is just a lump of coal that survived the pressure and

stress...

Hi,

My name is billie and I just found out about this list last night.

I've had type 1 diabetes for nearly thirty years.

I am also blind from diabetic retinopathy.

In the last six months I have finally decided to be a good diabetic and my

blood sugars now run from ninety to 120 most of the time.

I just wanted to say hello to every one and so far I am finding this list

very interesting!

thanks!

Billie, I like your attitude! Please don't apologize for the typing, it's

fine. I'm glad you found us. There are a lot of really sweet people on this

list...all very supportive. Although I've only been diagnosed for four

years, I've stuck with the list because I want to help motivate newbies to be

proactive and get good control before damage is done. My doc says I'm his

only patient who is so motivated. I wish I could talk with some of his new

diabetic patients...I'm sure I could get them to see the light, smile...Vicki

<<

So I thank God every time I think aobut it that I'm so fortunate.

I'm sorry my typing is atrocious tonight!

Diabetes and blindness are both things that can be lived with and I'm

learning!

the blindess can actually be fun at times!

We won't go there! >>

Hi Barb,

I do test at least twice a day and my fingers certainly show the wear and

tear!

I haven't had the other test you mentioned.

There's only one diabetic doctor around here and we have clashed big time

and I won't go to him.

he thinks he's God.

I have tried the glucose tablets and they don't work too well for me.

I usually don't realize my blood sugar is low until it's really low!

and one Pop Tart usually brings it back up pretty fast and not real high!

thanks for this list!

I love it!

hi Rita,

yes the blindness and a little high blood pressure which is under perfect

control is the only complications of the diabetes I have so far.

I still have all the feeling in my feet and legs and hands.

Braille is a little difficult for me to read but I'm not sure why.

i don't know if it's neuropathy or what because I can feel very well with my

fingers.

and last February I was in the emergency room with a stomach virus and the

doctor listened to my kidneys and he ask me how long I'd had diabetes and

when I told him he was amazed.

he said I had perfect kidney function.

i've been blind for nine years.

i've had ten surgeries all together to try to restore my sight. but none of

them were successful. and I've recently been diagnosed with glaucoma in the

left eye.

right now it's also being controlled.

I don't get a lot of exercise because the area I live in is very rural and

not really safe for me to get out.

but I do all my own house keeping and I cook all my own meals and I have two

little cockatiels that call me mommy!

they keep me busy for sure and give me lots of love!

I've been divorced for a year and that's been a blessing for sure.

the marriage was a very abusive one.

I just try to eat like they taught me at the school for the blind I went to.

and no sugary food.

Although I love that stuff I don't allow it any more.

and I findally got my mom to stop pushing desserts at me!

she has finally realized that I'm serious and I won't eat it.

Hi Vicky,

Well I do take at least part of the responsibility for my being blind.

I knew it would cause complications but I didn't care until they started

happening.

Now I care.

i've seen too many of my friends now going into kidney failure and other

stuff.

My mom and dad had three kids and all three kids have diabetes.

My brother has passed on and it wasn't from diabetes but he did have a heart

problem from it. My sister has had a heart attack and congestive heart

failure and now kidney failure for the second time. Her transplant only

lasted four years.

So I thank God every time I think aobut it that I'm so fortunate.

I'm sorry my typing is atrocious tonight!

I'll just suffice it to say you can have a lot of fun with people sometimes

when you are blind!

not mean fun either!

they laugh too!

Have you tried eating a little bit of food off and on during the day

to keep BS stable. Maybe every hour have something that would tide you

over to next time but not raise BS too high. A little carb and protein

together so it will stick to your ribs and lets your body think it is

not going to starve!

Some people need a steady intake of food rather than eating 3 meals a

day. Spread it out over the entire day from getting up until going to

bed but don't increase amount of food for the day's total.

May be the secret to keep from going low.

Know what you mean about doctors, I have had a few clashes too, not

regarding diabetes but other problems. Even more the reason to read,

read, search, search for info about hypo and diabetes.

Billie, an hbA1c is a blood test that shows your average blood glucose for

the past 2-3 months. It is an excellent barometer every 3 months to see how

your control is doing. By frequent testing I meant upon rising, before and

1-2 hours after every meal and before bed and keeping good notes, so you can

see patterns about how your diet and exercise program is doing. If you

can't test that much, I'd alternate at the times listed above. 1 hour after

eating should show the spike and 2 hours after should show how it's coming

down again...or not. As always, every one is different, but this is

something to start with anyway.

Hi Marie,

Yeah I used to eat a little snakc in between meals but that only made the

blood sugars too high.

and in fact, and I'm sure I will hear about this, I don't eat lunch at all.

I usually eat a good breakfast and then a good dinner and that's all.

I just don't like eating in the middle of the day.

If I have to I will eat a small snack in the middle of the day but not

often.

I don't go low very often but when I do it's real low before I know it.

I do have a doctor and he keeps track of the blood sugars and stuff so I'm

feeling alright about everything right now.

And a question for all of you. Do any of you use the Lantus insulin?

I tried that and it didn't work for me.

maybe I did something wrong.

Please tell me about it if you do use it.

I would love to cut down to one shot a day!

Instead of two or three!

Billie
