Hello, dear Just diagnosed, being that you are in Seattle why not trying UW. I

have heard nothing but good things about it. I would check it out.

Just diagnosed/Hyst. recommended where to go i

Hello all - so glad to have found this group just days after my

diagnosis. I have been experiencing very heavy periods for several

years (intermittently), but had never been told I had fibroids. After

the last bout of a month long bleed I ended up anemic and my doctor

ordered an ultrasound where they found a large fibroid (3 inches) up

near the top and the side of my uterus. My uterus was also twice the

size of normal. Neither docs could feel it in the pelvic, which is

prob. why it went unnoticed. My uterus tips back instead of forward,

which is rare I guess, and maybe another reason they couldn't feel it.

Anyway, my gynec. said the only real treatment is to do a

hysterectomy

(I was actually quite prepared to hear this, since common sense told

me they couldn't cut it out). But, since I am anemic they wouldn't be

able to do surgery for awhile, so she gave me a prescription for a

pill (I do not take them now) for me to try to see if it can control

the bleeding.

My question is two-fold: If I get by on the pill and it does the

trick, is this just going to be a temporary fix until it gets so big

I

have to have it out? Should I just resign myself to the hysterectomy

(which on the one hand thrills me to think of no more periods, and on

the other scares me because of the surgery)?

Second thing: Where in Seattle would I find the top specialists in

this surgery? I know that it is prob. done by any surgeon, but I want

a specialist. Right now I am going to a doctor at Virginia Mason, so

hopefully a good one will be at the downtown hospital.

Oh, I am 49 years old, never had kids. Any help I could get out there

would be most apprec
