Guest guest
Marla, I have type II diabetes THANKS to the prednisone I take, my endocronologist actually calls it steroid-induced diabetes. I am able to control it with medication, Metformin, the amount increases or decreases when my prednisone dose changes. So, yes, steroids can affect your BG big time! Guest guest
Marla, I have type 2 diabetes. Steroids can really do a number on BG's, so I understand why your doctor does not want you to take them. I took prednisone for a few months, waiting for MTX to kick in. I was still able to maintain reasonably good BG's, but only by eating hardly any carbs. The prednisone knew when I ate carbs! I had had a dose pack and liked how the steroids took away the pain. I kept a log of my BG's and showed my rheumy that I could still manage my diabetes with a low dose of prednisone. So he prescribed it. But then I learned about all of the bad side effects and got off of it as soon as I could. I have been on Enbrel now for five years, and it works very well for me. It has no effect on my BG's. If I were you, I would stay off the steroids and ask for other medications instead. What are you on now? Sometimes it takes a combination of DMARD's to do the trick. Guest guest
Are your numbers after meals that good, too? If so, that is wonderful. Guest guest
Hi Marla I am diabetic, i am type 1 so i am on insulin for every meal. My doc has given me steriod shots directly into a trouble spot before but oral meds are a definate no no for me. Some people can take them, depends on how well you control your Blood sugar and what type of diabetes you have. i have taken so many RA meds that i don't think i could list them all. Predisone is the only one i haven't taken due to diabetes. Arava really worked awesome for me for many years but then it started affecting my liver. I am on Humira now. i haven't really noticed that any of the meds have had an effect on my blood sugar. Hope you find some relief! Guest guest
Hi Marla, When I was diagnosed with RA my rheumy wanted me to take prednisone but I made the choice not to take it. This was before I was diagnosed Type II diabetes, but I'm bipolar and steroids can make even a non-mood-disordered person whacky at times. I decided not to chance it. I take Meloxicam daily for pain and inflammation, Darvocet on those nights when the pain is really uncomfortable and weekly MTX. Although I think the prednisone might have brought the pain under control a little sooner, I'm happy with my decision to put it off. Sometimes other options work. Guest guest
Marla, I've been hearing good things about byetta on my diabetes mailing list. Did you notice that the salsalate improved your BG's? I've read that it can. I couldn't tolerate because it made my stomach hurt, and I'd already had a bleeding ulcer from Aleve. Guest guest
Beyetta did hurt my stomach for about two days, but now its ok. I haven't noticed it lowering sugars, however, it does make me feel full so i don't overeat. marla Sue wrote: > > Marla, > > I've been hearing good things about byetta on my diabetes mailing list. > Did you notice that the salsalate improved your BG's?
