Hi, Judy,

I work and live in N. NJ. My mom lives in Rockland county in NY. Mom was

diagnosed as AD 2009, later being diagnosed LBD. Mom was in Hospice from Sumer

of 2010(when she broke her hips. and after post on this group and talk  to

different Dr. I and my dad decided not do the sugery)to this past summer. Would

like to see some support group in the area for LBD, I can find local group for

Hi Jan,

You are lucky you have has the occasion to have friends close by to socialize

with who are part of the group. I would imagine that as you say that it is

meaningful to match faces with names who have been so much a part of your

journey through lewy land with a loved one.

I'm actually amazed there are not more people for The NYC area who are part of

this forum - If there are other members from the NY, NJ and the tristate area

here I would love to know who you are- the only one I have I know this far is

helene .....

Thanks,

AD and Pakinsons but no LBD.

Daughter of Ziwen (81, Diagnosed in 2009)

Judy,

I am in Connecticut, in Meriden which is smack dab in the middle of the state. I

agree, it would be good to know who else is from the area.

Barbara

daughter of Betsy, age 80, diagnosed in 1998.

Thanks,

Judy

Jan, your story reminds me so much of what my mother went through. Her

second marriage only lasted 5 years. Her husband, Bob, was diagnosed with

cancer in the 4th year and by the 5th year he was gone.

Mom and Bob had a pre-nup which sounded so reasonable at the time: mine to

my kids and yours to your kids. The problem is that the pre-nup didn't

take into account the things that can and do happen during a marriage. Bob

used Mom's savings in a scheme that was supposed to make her nest egg a

little more secure. But he lost money on it, which meant that Mom didn't

recoup the original investment, leaving Mom worse off. Then, Mom ended up

nursing a cranky and sick man for almost the entire last year of their

marriage. Bob had two daughters - adults - but no help at all came from

them. When he passed, Mom made all of the arrangements and the daughters

did little but attend the funeral and take his ashes home. It was up to

Mom to pack away all of his things, decide what to give to charity and then

ship the things the daughters wanted to them.

One of the daughters was seriously learning challenged (is that the right

term) and, though past 40 years old, could not read. During the marriage,

Mom very patiently took the time and made the effort to teach her. When

her father died she married a man who had the same type of disabilities.

They had a baby, though she was past 45. The child was a Downs Syndrome

baby. This daughter kept calling Mom for help, though the child's other

grandparents were the ones that pushed for a baby. Mom was emotionally

exhausted, but took the calls from both this daughter and her sister.

Finally, I had it with them and started telling them that Mom wasn't

available to talk with them. Sometimes you have to forget about politeness

and kindness and protect the people you love. They finally got the hint

and stopped calling.

There are just people in the world who are users, by choice or just by

personality. They will use you to do the things that they should be doing,

like participating in the care of their sick father, for as long as you are

willing to take it. It sounds like Jim's kids fit into this category. I

think you're well rid of them.

Unfortunately, I hear any number of similar stories. I just don't

understand how people can distance themselves from their own parents when

their parents need them and then swoop in and get what they can as soon as

that parent is gone. I do know, though, that when you achieve distance

from Jim's kids, life will get easier to deal with. At least it did for

Mom.

Best wishes.

I'm glad you found us.

First & foremost:

NO TRADITIONAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS (e.g. Haldol, Chlorpromazine),

NO ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS (e.g. Benadryl, Tylenol PM, Detrol, Enablex)

EXTREME CAUTION with MOST BENZODIAZEPINES (e.g. Ativan)

EXTREME CAUTION with some ATYPICAL ANTIPSYCHOTICS (e.g. Risperidone, Zyprexa) -

but some are used w/ success (e.g. Seroquel, Clozaril) " Start Low, Go Slow "

Take a moment to post a possible med. before trying - this board has an archives

section w/ tons & tons of warnings about meds that don't work for those w/ LBD -

they are extremely sensitive to meds!
