Guest guest
I don't know if I agree with your internist. He may be right about the possibility that in a teaching hospital you will be " worked on " by residents and other doctors working with your surgeon. But conventional wisdom says that you should have surgery done at a hospital and with a surgeon who does the type of surgery you are considering in the most volume. Typically, those tend to be the larger hospitals ... and often, they turn out to be teaching institutions. If you wish to consider MA and FL, by all means do so. But I would check on their stats also. Larry E. > > Hello All, i've been reading all yours posts with interest. I just > joined the group a few days ago. Guest guest
NYC has great hospitals with great doctors. Even though they are teaching hospitals you will be worked on by the best if you make the right decisions.Get written copies of all your tests, including any scans and your biopsy. Ask your doc to explain all the information, bring another person with you to all your doctor appointments to ask questions and listen to all answers. Then discuss with your partner what was said to be sure you heard everything and did not forget anything. At this moment you are under stress and should not rely on your memory. Go to a support group before you make any treatment decisions and meet other guys who have already been where you are. Find out what decisions they made, what the results and ramifications have been as a result of their decisions. In the New York City there are a number of groups. Malecare has a weekly group of just discussion every Wednesday at 6 p.m. This is an excellent support group, I strongly recommend it and go almost every week myself. I also can recommend the USTOO NY group that meets the third Thursday of the month. This group starts with a lecture and then breaks down to a support group. Both f these groups are excellent. If you are interested in additional information send me a an email off the list and I will reply with specific locations, times etc. Go a head with the planned scans, they are the right next step. Hello All, i've been reading all yours posts with interest. I just joined the group a few days ago. I was diagnosed with PCa a few weeks ago. I'm 46yoa male with no family history of PCa. Diagnosis is a result of DRE, palable nodule (node), ultrasound and biopsy with 13 core samples taken. I asked the doctor to send lab work to a second lab for verification. I'm in the New York City metro area and am considering going into NYC for second opinion etc. Although in speaking to my internist today (who incidentally found the intial enlarged prostate and node), mentioned not not liking the larger NY City hospitals as they are teaching hospitals and generally you don't get the same doctor working on you who you have consulted with. Guest guest
As far as surgery goes, I have read some really good things about the hospital and one of the affiliated doctors with the hospital in Celebration, Florida (a Disney created community) that is just south of the Orlando area, in this forum. Another good resource is to visit www.pcref.org, listen to the broadcast via the website on Tuesday, 9PM EST, or sign up for coaching at the site by Dr. Israel Barken. Considering your age of onset (if you are African-American, screening starting age for PCA is at age 40 rather then 50), the earlier the age of diagnosis, the stronger is the possibility of the cancer becoming aggressive. Guest guest
If you are in the NYC area you may want to take a look at Hackensack University Hospital in Hackensack NJ. It is the home of the Prostate Cancer Institute of New Jersey and the web site is www.humed.com/prostate I was referred there in 2007 when I was diagnosed and had daVinci in May 2007 there. They have many good groups of urologist that are there and offer many treatment options. This is a teaching hospital as well but the surgeon I chose was the one that did the surgery. I chose him because of the number of daVinci procedures he had done and I made sure to ask him if he would be doing it. If you should elect to have surgery they specialize in daVinci robotic and have six machines. If you want any doctor information let me know. This is a great group and you will get lots of useful information from the members here. Just remember that surgery is not the only treatment and in most cases you have time to research and learn as much as you can about this miserable disease and make the right decision for you. Your a young guy and no matter what treatment option you choose there will be negative side effects that you will have to live with the rest of your life. Guest guest
Hi, I had pretty similar " stats " when i got diagnised this year at age 47. After a lot of research, I'm pretty set on proton radiation. I'm opposed to surgery, and the proton treatment seems to offer the best chance of fewer secondary cancers from the treatment which is important for someone our age. My biggest decision is to delay treatment as long as possible. My doctor at University of Penn had me get an MRI to get a closer reading on the size and most importantly to location of the tumor. Since the treatment is always the same (i.e. cut out or kill the whole prostate) and the biggest risk is the cancer spreading outside the prostate, why not monitor it VERY closely and take action when the doctor feels it's time. I'm comfortable with having the cancer in my body and getting as many years in as I can before dealing with it. Guest guest
: Thanks for sharing... I'm 45 same stats more or less same except PSA 5.4 and you are the 1st person who stated other than my Doctor that time was NOT something we didn't have and was more than willing not to push any procedure right now. Had my bone scan done yesterday results tomorrow but expected at least I hope that all will be negative and he is not even sceduled to see me till May 1st. Till such time I'm going to gather as much info as possible and visit several more urologist specialist to hear what they all have to say. Guest guest
1. Since the Memorial Sloan Kettering website is one of the key sources of information on the Web, perhaps MSKCC (in Manhattan, the last I knew) would be worth visiting. " Teaching hospital " or not, there are lots of experts there. 2. You're probably a candidate for " active surveillance " , given your low PSA and Gleason scores. Gleason 6 is always " 3+3 " . You have the option of doing nothing, at least for a while. Take your time in deciding on treatment, and on who does it. You'll be living with the side effects for a long time. > ________________________________ > > To: ProstateCancerSupport > Sent: Monday, December 1, 2008 7:45:03 PM > Subject: 46 YOA PCa Diagnosis/NYC Metro Area > > > Hello All, i've been reading all yours posts with interest.
