Guest guest
Sorry. Without my hitting the " send " button, the message was sent. Anyway, I think I found the POA issues the most frustrating when dealing with anything during Mom's journey. If I had it to do over, I would have more than one copy signed and notarized. Not that I would let go of an original but it would provide a bit more comfort since the journey is so long and the document so important. So many copies of that document were sent out over the six years... Good luck to you and your mother. Lynn in Florida ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ snip> I was finally told that they would not cancel it without the ORIGINAL POA! Needless to say, that was not going to happen and they refused to cancel her account. I sent a certified letter to them stating that neither my mother or I would be responsible if any of the blank checks, etc., that were sent out were stolen by another person. >

Guest guest
Here in Wisconsin the POA for health care must be " activated " by two doctors who sign a document that certifies the party is incompetent to make any decisions. Without the two doctors certification the POA is worthless. So you must get the person examined by a psychiatrist and a psychologist when the time comes. I had to wait three months for an appointment as the doctors were all booked up! Every state in the US has different laws about POA's. Good Luck in Canada! Pat M. > ** > > > Sorry. Guest guest
Our attorney provided us with several notarized copies of everything he prepared for us both, while retaining a copy in the law firm's safe. To date I have not given away any of the original copies we received. Those have remained in our files at home and one to each of our children.  I have xeroxed several copies that I have given to all of our heath care providers and financial institutions.  I also provided copies of documents to the hospital when Kathy needed her surgery. So far, none have asked for an original.  Perhaps a time will come when that situation will change. Best of luck  Jeff When you feel like giving up, remember why you held on for so long in the first place. Guest guest
Our attorney asked us how many originals we wanted, aside from the one his firm kept in their vault. I had no idea but ended up with three originals of each document (POA, will and medical directive). I never allowed anyone to keep those originals, but I did let them see them and copy them. I just cancelled one of Mom's credit cards, but she has passed and all they needed was the death certificate. If the credit card is associated with a bank, could you take an original to them and let them copy it? That was enough for Mom's bank when I started handling her finances. Kate > ** > > > Sorry. Guest guest
I was given 5 originals I think with the assurance I could have as many more as I needed. Everyone involved wanted to see an original. Most photocopied it and returned the original but a couple kept the original. > snip> I was finally told that they would not cancel it without the ORIGINAL POA!
