Dr. ph Gaugler, of the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, is

one of the leading researchers in the study of caregiving. Each year, at

the U of Mn, he presents a one-day seminar for both family and professional

caregivers, bringing them together in one place. (Professionals wanting

CEUs do pay for those, but it is minimal.) This week's conference was held

last Saturday and it was excellent. I want to give you a couple of web

site links that you might be interested in.

Past seminar information and, I think, this year's actual presentations can

be found at

yLoss/index.htm

..

I would also like to suggest that you take a look at a very special place

started and run by a very special woman, Judy Berry. It is called Lakeview

Ranch, located in rural Minnesota. Judy has a different way of looking at

dementia that is incredibly caring. She believes that the person's essence

is always there, regardless of dementia. Dementia only keeps them from

communicating the way they had before. She suggests that many behaviors

are the result of anxiety over something they need to do. She tells of one

dairy farmer that would get agitated at about 4:00 every afternoon. A

little thought helped the staff understand that 4:00 was milking time and

he was worried about the cows. Telling him that his son was taking care of

it that day eased his anxiety and the behavior stopped. I want to

encourage that you take a look at lakeviewranch.com to learn more of her

special way with dementia.

And, if you are close to the Minneapolis area, you might want to get on Dr.

Gaugler's mailing list for future seminars.

Just sharing.
