Guest guest
Hi, Just completed 12 of my 40 sessions of IGRT (with gold implants and Varian On-Board Imager). All going well so far with very little side effects. Anyone else at similar stage and want to compare notes? Malaga, Spain
Guest guest
May I ask what IGRT is? I have no idea. My husband had IMRT treatments, 42 in all. How many treatments do you have to have? I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, Thanks for the reply. IGRT is Image Guided RadioTherapy. I must admit I haven't been able to establish the difference to IMRT; perhaps it's just the terminology each of the various manufacturers of the technology use. Today was treatment 14, 26 moreto go, for a total of 40 treatment sessions. By the way I used to leave very near Plaistow, London, England. I imagine it is not remotely simialr to New Hampshire! Best regards, Chris Re: IGRT in progress May I ask what IGRT is? I have no idea. My husband had IMRT treatments, 42 in all. How many treatments do you have to have? Guest guest
Hi It was so nice of you to reply. May I ask what your numbers were, like PSA and Gleason#? Did they implant any gold markers on the prostate as they did with my husband. The doctors told us that was for lining up properly. I was just wondering if it is the same as IMRT. Do they check you blood levels? The doctors checked my husbands levels every two weeks. I hope you have a good day and like I said I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted on your progress. Good luck!! Sheila --------- Re: IGRT in progress May I ask what IGRT is? I have no idea. My husband had IMRT treatments, 42 in all. Guest guest
Hi Sheila, As part of a routine checkup June 07 I discovered that my PSA (age then 47) was 7.76 My Doc didn't seem too concerned and was more worried about my cholesterol, a repeat 3 months later and PSA had dropped to 5.5 A final test in Dec 07 showed PSA of 4.15 An ultrasound scan showed nothing abnormal and prostate volume as 22cc.My Doc said it was nothing to worry about and to come back in 12 months. Thankfully a friend advised that was too long to wait and I went to see a urologist in June 08 at a new healthcare centre which had just opened locally and was covered by my insurance. This PSA came in at 5.56 with a freePSA of 10%. My new urologist said it was a concern and advised a biopsy. Results came back July 28th as one core positive and gleason 7 (4+3) with prostate volume 28cc. Uro/surgeon said my best option was a radical prostatectomy by Sept at latest, however I wasn't keen and after a 2 hour consult with an oncologist at the same hospital and 4weeks of net research I was leaning towards the IGRToption. My female oncologist was also the first Doc to offer a DRE! . A 90 minute MRI showed no spread, capsule intact, but did reveal a 1cm tumour in the left lobe. I have a great deal of confidence in Doctora Rios and decided to go ahead with the IGRT. Yes I had the gold markers inserted into my prostate for tracking. This was done without any anaesthetic which was eyewatering to say the least! I would recommend anyone who goes this route to insist on a local a local anaesthetic for the markers. Mine were inserted by the surgeon I had turned down for surgery and I'm half convinced the lack of anaesthetic was 'revenge'; even the attending nurse was surprised it wasn't used. Anyway so far I'm happy with my choice and hope it continues so well. Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and good wishes. Chris Re: IGRT in progress May I ask what IGRT is? I have no idea. Guest guest
> May I ask what IGRT is? I have no idea. (snip) IGRT = Image-Guided Radiation Therapy. Two differences from IMRT are: (1) Where IMRT uses an ultrasound method called BAT (B-mode Acquisition and Targeting) to establish the location of the gland at each tx session, IGRT uses a CT scan, and (2) IMRT uses a " step and shoot " method of delivering the radiation, usually five steps from side to side, roughly 110 degrees. IGRT delivers the radiation from 360 degrees. Regards, Steve J

Guest guest
Hi Thank you for your response, again, I appreciate all you told me. My husband had a PSA 7.1 and a Gleason #9. So to stop the cancer from spreading the doctors put him on Hormone Therapy. He had radicial surgery booked for May. After much research and five more specialist we decided on Proton Beam Radiation Therapy, but we were told that with a Gleason that high the cancer could be on the outside wall of the prostate and they wanted to radiate the lymph nodes as well and recommended IMRT. So we went the IMRT, that's how we ended up there. His last PSA was 0.08. My husband has one more three month injection of hormones in November than he's done. The big PSA test will be taken in May. That should tell us if the treatments worked. So we are kind of holding our breath waiting for next May. You take care and may God Bless you. I will keep you in my thoughts.
