ALTERNATIVES is an independent Canadian environmental journal now in its

26th year. Published in magazine format by Alternatives Inc., a non-profit

charitable organization, and widely distributed through bookstores, it aims

to promote understanding and dialogue among scholars, professionals,

activists and students concerned about the environment, including its social

and political dimensions.

Each quarterly issue contains refereed feature articles along with news

reports, commentaries and reviews covering a broad range of concerns,

controversies and initiatives centred on environmental thought, politics and

action.

The current issue

http://www.fes.uwaterloo.ca/Research/Alternatives/recent99.htm#251 features

articles on how our techniques of farming and food production affect us and

the environment. It's true, we are what we eat. But more so than ever, the

planet is what we eat. While we used to depend on food that was locally

produced and processed, we are now participants in a global system, as

organized as any industry and using sophisticated new technologies. Our

dietary choices now affect distant ecosystems and societies, and what

dietary choices we have are largely shaped by a food production system with

which we no longer have direct contact. Read on and eat well!
