Shandi,

I hear you. The last time I was on predisone I couldn't sleep. I

ended up doing a scrapbook of when I was in Europe. I finally had to

ask my doctor for some sleep aids since OTC sleep aids, teas,

valerium root etc...didn't work. I have really bad insomnia and I cry

at the drop of a hat and gain weight. Talk to your rheumy about your

side effects, hopefully they will be willing to help you out.

However, the pred. is keeping me awake! And when I am awakened it is

nearly impossible to get back to sleep. I am hot flashy, sticky, and

otherwise icky...and am only on 10 mg!

Me too! I have to take it early in the morning or else I'll be up most of the

night. It's the worst insomnia too b/c you're exhausted and just can't close

your eyes to sleep. It's almost like a restless fatigue. Yucko. Feel better

soon! Kate F

wow i never gave it a thought that the prednisone could be a cuse of my constant

tossing and turning all night. i wake up at least 4 or 5 times at night and

change positions at least 10 timesa. i get morning flashes , i break out into a

massive sweat just getting dressed . i have been on a maintenance dose of 10 mgs

of prednisone for years. cant wean off it without having major flareups, this

is in addition to my taking ENBREL and methotrexate and an NSAID . jerry

I don't know if its an option for you or not, but I started doing

beginners yoga every other night (as able) and it has really helped me

to relax and my sleep has improved from three- four hours per night to

at least six.... Thats enough proof for me to continue... I actually

attend a class every thursday night, and I use a beginners tape the

rest of the time... Of course, some nights I'm just not able but I

try to do my best because the results are amazing...

Just a suggestion

Although I understand the need for the prednisone, I think it's rather odd that

you would be prescribed that particular medication for nighttime. I have always

been told not only by my PCP but my RA doc that prednisone should always be

taken in the mornings. Maybe you should inform your doc and maybe there is an

alternative.

Jerry...

When I was originally on a higher dose of pred. (10mg) I used to take it in

the evening. My eyes would stay open until 3 - 4am, no matter how tired I was.

My doctor put me on trazadone and that would sometimes help, but not always. I

had read that pred can cause problems and switched it to taking it in the

morning. Gone was sleeping problems, the sweats, etc. However, the pred. would

wear off some and every so often would have trouble sleeping because I was

" crunchy " at night.

Right now I am in a flare and am splitting the pred dose so I am not crunchy

at night. 5 and 5 still gives me issue at night. I tried to wean down some but

the flare is still quite active. In a few minutes I am calling my rheumy and

see if anything can be done, because I hate being sweaty and tired.

I have insomnia before I even became ill with FMS or

RA and have been on a sleeping medication for years.

I'm rarely ever given Prednisone due to my age and

what it can do to the body and bones. It's always a

last resort with my doctors and I have probably only

been given it 2 to 3 times the past few years. I

wouldn't be surprised if it does cause contribute to

poor sleeping though.
