Just curious - my mother often makes what my brother calls " humming " sounds,

only they're more like " uh huh, uh huh, uh huh. " She can talk fine and handle

ADLs, but she also has visual and auditory hallucinations (which invariably lead

to her believing that someone is breaking into her apartment to leave things

there that she claims she never bought) so she is probably in stage 2 of LBD as

described in the Files section. But the " humming " is really irritating to listen

to. If asked about it, she says she's not in pain. It seems like a weird

automatic verbal tic. I'm wondering whether anyone else has experienced

something similar with a LO.

My mother did that. She had vascular dementia. We could never figure out why

she did it. Nan

We had sounds like this and they were repetitive and my mil was not always

aware she was making sounds like this and there seemed little to do about it

other than engage in something else like singing or spelling bee, etc. It

may get better or be replaced with something more pleasant. or not. Also,

even if they say they are not experiencing pain does not mean they are not.

That's a tough part of this to figure out sometimes. There is a more recent

and fitting evaluation for pain in Dementia. You might try googling

" evaluating pain in Dementia " and see if you can find it or related

information. I can look for it over the weekend.

I work in a prison for the mentally ill. We have a patient with dementia,

diagnosed by our MH staff as Alzheimer's, but with his violent tendencies, I

wonder. Anyway, he makes so much noise (and for hours) it bothers the other

offenders. Sometimes he will sit on the edge of his bed and rock as he does

it. Sometimes all night. I have to believe the sound comes from the

dementia, but I don't know why.
