Have you tried an intensive behvaioral management program? My son went

to a Neuro Behavioral Unit which offers that service both in patient and

outpatient.

What state are you in?

-Hi There!

I have 2 sons,PDD, they are now 13 & 11. My oldest is

non verbal. That is to say, he doesn't talk, but it

doesn't mean he doesn't have anything to say. He follows

instructions, and understands everything we say. But

because he is non-verbal, he tends to use other means

to communicate, and unfortunately, one of those ways is

by being physical, sometimes to the point of being

dangerous.

Since my boys were little, we walked. In the stroller,

After they graduated the stroller. We walked on the

beach (they could run ahead there or backwards even

you know, it's a beach, not the same rules as other

places) The malls never worked for us, my big one

could not make the transition from the mall corridor

to the stores, etc, Anyway, my point is, we walked

for exercise and because it always helped take the

fight out the boys come bedtime. They fell asleep

a little easier and slept a little deeper (until

they woke up and it all started all over again!)

Til today we walk, almost 5 miles an evening. We

have a few different routes. Some include stops

for sitting or for an ice-pop etc. The extra

physical activity helps them get out their energy

and it works better for us than pills or TV!

You could also consider going back to the play-

ground or riding a bike.

GOOD LUCK!

--Hi Again!

I responded to your post, but somehow the second-half

of what I wrote was omitted.

Anyway, my point was that by increasing my sons'

physical activity (walks, bike, pool etc- we even have

a special dog for him) it helped take alot of the

agression out of him. He is more balanced for longer

periods of time. Both boys went thru extreme hitting

and biting stages, but the key is they went thru

it, it passed. So hang in there.

Hi ,

Welcome to the group.I have a 9yr old son who has been having the same issues. He

has has problems with impulsive aggression ,biting, scratching, pinching myself

and others and now it has developed into him doing these things to himself when

angry. These behaviors started about a year ago.I understand what you may be

dealing with.I tried many things before turning to medication and to be honest

it's gotten worse before anything has improved. Here we are a year later and half

a dozen meds later. He's now on Seroquel and just started Buspar.I've seen

improvement but he still has " episodes " here and there.

What things have you tried with your daughter? Have you explored if there's

something medically that causes this behavior?(pain or discomfort)Is your child

verbal? My son is limited verbally,he cannot discribe or tell me if something

hurts.I've ruled out anything dental(cavities etc)Now I'm going through the

process of doing some testing for any digestive conditions (celiacs

disease, etc)Just to rule out his behavior is not do to some type of pain or

discomfort caused by any medical condition that we don't know about.I know it's

frustrating and exhausting .Hopefully we can both find a solution for our kids

soon.

Hi, Thanks for writing back. It is great to hear from

someone who knows what we are going through. My

daughter is non verbal, so she can't tell us if

something is hurting. I've done the dental stuff and

we are going next week to start check for digestive

problems. Sound like we are in the same boat. I can't

tell you how much of a relief it is to just know there

are others that understand. How do you handle the

outbursts when they happen? We usually have to

physically restrain my daughter to keep her from

hurting herself. She is on one med. Risperadal and one

for stomach prilosec. Talk to you later and again

thanks for responding.

Wow,your story sounds so much like mine ..the only difference is you have a

daughter! My son is on Prilosec as well.Last year I discovered he was having

gastric reflux.Long story short he had an endoscopy last august and since the

Prilosec he's been fine.He had it pretty bad, projectile vomiting as well.We

started with Risperdal for the behaviors. He gained 10lbs in a month which I feel

was complicating his reflux and it really wasn't dealing with the aggression so

we stopped.

Since then we've tried adderal ER and metadate which both stopped his appetite

completely so we had to stop after a week ,then abilify which constipated him

badly..so we stopped that one. Then now he's on both Seroquel and

Buspar(buspiradone)The Seroquel has helped some but he adjusts to it quickly so

I had to keep increasing his dose.We added the Buspar..very low dose(10mg 2times

daily)and I've seen improvement.It used to be 2-3times a day with these

" episodes " .

He'd basically get violent ,screaming,almost hysterical.If I had a valium I

would have given it to him when he gets like that.Just out of control.Sometimes

I have had to hold him down as well for sake of keeping him from hurting himself

or pulling over furniture and being destructive.I've got scars from him

scratching me all over my hands and arms. When he has these episodes I just know

that the next 20-30min is going to be bad.It just goes on and on.No way to calm

him or help him regulate himself.

It's like a cycle that has to complete. At the end most times he'll break down

and cry.He has had these outbursts in public,in the car.I'm thinking of going

off the seroquel since it really wasn't doing anything to control his episodes

to see if the buspar alone will do the job.He already takes meds for his

epilepsy(Depakote and Klonopin).

I'd really like to have him on less meds if possible because all this stuff can

take it's toll on your body. The digestive testing will be a combination of some

blood tests as well as stool sampling .I had no idea that would be something I'd

be doing over a 3day period. But it has to be done. This has to be done because

like your daughter,my son cannot communicate if he's in pain. It's like a process

of elimination to find the root of the problem or make sure you're on the right

track. So frustrating but you can imagine what it's like for them.Well..let's

keep each other posted and I'll talk to you soon!

For me personally I don't get sick very often even on the meds. I do get a

flu shot and pnemonia shot each year though because I am afraid of getting the

flu. I do have allergies and sinus problem that I think got worse because of

the meds, but we have that semi under control with my ENT and he does not

feel its related to the RA, but more because of the weather, so who knows

I get a flu shot yearly myself. Have had that every year for well over 10

years now and no flu!

Just very frustrating. And missing work, not good. Ive increased my

vitamin c intake to try to ward off the evil spirits, lol.

Hello! I had bronchitis for three months this year,

then got better for a week, developed an upper

respiratory and sinus infection, then a couple of

weeks later, got the flu! They stated that three new

strains of the flu showed up this year that they were

not prepared for, so a lot of people that got the

shot, ended up with the flu. I avoid crowded places

when cold/flu outbreaks occur, I have a mask that I

wear to keep germs away from me, I am washing my hands

constantly, using Colorox wipes and anywhere spray,

lysol, and make sure that I wipe down all surfaces

daily to keep germs away. I also drink Emergen-C

which doesn't prevent colds, but has so many vitamins

in it, that hopefully it will atleast help
