Guest guest
Hello everyone! When I began Sulfasalazine, my rheumatologist had me go for a CBC with differentials to get a baseline reading. Once I began taking the medication, I had to go every two weeks to a local hospital to have a CBC with differentials done. Last time I saw my rheumatologist three months ago, she was leaving the hospital and advised I would be transferred to someone else. She said that since my results had been fine on all prior CBC's that I could have my labs done once a month. Today I saw the new rheumatologist and she advised that a CBC with differentials only needs to be done every 3 months. Does this correspond to what the rest of you that take Sulfasalazine does? I thank you for any input! ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Never miss a thing. Guest guest
It is a complete blood count that measures your red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The differntials are the five types of white blood cells that it measures. My rheumatologist had me get one before I even started the medication to get a baseline reading. Then I had to go every two weeks, then once a month. Since I have been on it for awhile and everything has been ok, they changed it to once every 12 weeks. Perhaps this is some of the blood work that you have done every two months? They monitor it because sometimes, sulfasalazine may reduce the number of disease-fighting white blood cells in the body. This often does not cause symptoms, but can be detected by regular blood tests performed by your doctor. --- andrea hecht <dreahecht@...> wrote: > I take four pills a day of Sufasalazine at 500mg. > each and my doctor has never mentioned CBC with > differentials. Guest guest
Hi , This is Steph in VA. I was on sulfasazine for 6 years. After weekly then monthly CBC tests for 6 months or so, I got my bloodwork done every 3 months. I recently stopped it because my rheumy felt it made my iron & platelets too low. Take care, Steph in VA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The 2008 Charlottesville Arthritis Walk is Sat.
