Ayurvedic firm tries to muster support for drug which claims to be a

cure for AIDS and Alzheimer's

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Barred by the Supreme Court from manufacturing

and selling Immuno QR, a drug which claims to cure AIDS, Alzheimer's

and mental retardation, Fair Pharma, a Kochi-based ayurvedic firm, is

trying to woo back its customers.

The Supreme Court passed the interim order on a petition filed by an

NGO, challenging the Kerala High Court's decision to restore licence

to TA Majeed, the manufacturer of the medicine. The apex court on

March 2002, had directed that the order of the drug controller and

licensing authority for partially allowing the licence for drug

Immuno QR will be operative subject to the matter pending before the

High Court.

The High Court, however, stayed the order of the drug controller and

licensing authority after the state government counsel gave a

concession that Majeed will be permitted to sell and manufacture the

drug provided he doesn't make advertisements about the drug being a

cure for HIV/AIDS.

The Bombay High Court, too, barred Majeed in 1999. The present

Supreme Court order came after a plea by the Indian Network of

Positive People, which challenged the Kerala High Court's decision.

Admitting the appeal, a bench of the court said the High Court order

has to be substituted with its earlier direction. The High Court has

to settle the case within three months.

Meanwhile, Fair Pharma is busy mustering support. A

Thiruvananthapuram-based weekly ran a series of reports that

portrayed Majeed as a victimised medical practitioner.

The report on AIDS patients, claiming to be cured by Majeed's drug,

is supplemented by more claims by doctors in the United States and

Nigeria.

According to them, they have treated many HIV/AIDS patients with

Immuno QR.

But the real boost came in the form of MN Vijayan, a classical

Marxist, revered for his ideological battle with the CPI(M). Vijayan

cited the example of a circus artist from Kannur being cured from

AIDS by Immuno QR. According to him, it's an imperialist conspiracy

that " perceives all research as useless, unless it is supported by

profit-based business " .
