Guest guest
, Welcome... We don't have many here with Grave's... but we'll help where we can. What were your levels at your last labs? You haven't mentioned what type of replacement hormone they put you on after the RAI..... So I guess, to start.. What have the results of your labs been since the RAI? What med are you on now and at what dose? How long have you been on that dose? It sounds like your levels might be low (hormone levels) and you're swinging farther hypo... You've been to the Phoenix site.. did you happen to check out the page on self monitoring? www.thyrophoenix.com/self_monitor.htm How did your numbers come out? Guest guest
That is 165 mgs of Armour, not mcgs. Also, what are your levels of thyroid hormones, with the lab reference ranges to go with them. NEVER accept a nurse or doctor just saying they are "normal" and leaving it at that. ALWAYS get a copy of your labs, so that YOU can decide what's normal for you. If you're not feeling well, and you have a gut feeling it's that, then it probably is. What's normal for someone else probably isn't normal for you. That's how a whole bunch of us ended up gathered on these thyroid sites, talking to each other. Re: New Member , Welcome... Guest guest
, I'd definitely like to see some labs.... Make sure that you get TSH, Free T3, Free T4 and the antibody for Grave's [does anyone remember off hand which one that is?] I think you're running too low, but whether that is Grave's related or low replacement I'm not sure. Did they verify how much of your gland was destroyed by RAI? How are your hubby's labs looking? Sounds like you are both feeling on the hypo side... what brand of thyroid are you taking? What were your levels at your last labs? It's been almost a year so I don't have them ... I'm setting up an appt. soon. You haven't mentioned what type of replacement hormone they put you on after the RAI..... I take Armour Thyroid (natural thyroid replacement) So I guess, to start.. What have the results of your labs been since the RAI? Borderline high What med are you on now and at what dose? .165 mcg once per day How long have you been on that dose? The doctor changes my doseage at least once a year ... seems never to get it right. It sounds like your levels might be low (hormone levels) and you're swinging farther hypo... that's the way I feel ... but the test are all "borderline" You've been to the Phoenix site.. did you happen to check out the page on self monitoring? www.thyrophoenix.com/self_monitor.htm How did your numbers come out? My basel rate is always around 96.5 - 97.2 My resperation is low ... I've told my doctor ... and my therapist sometimes I don't have enough energy to breath ... they think it's depression. But I also have panic attacks and hyperventilate ... so I'm wierd. And heart rate normal to high ... because of panic attacks ... Guest guest
: ) That's why I'm here ... not sure why it's taken me so long to realize that I need to take care of myself ... I'll have to write a letter to my doctor and have him mail me my results. My last visit was in November. I remember I switched doctors once because I told her I was feeling a lot of stress ... and that my job was effecting my stress levels more than normal ( I was VP of a private ambulance service at the time) and she actually laughed at me ... rolled her eyes and said your job is stressful. Then she proceeded to tell me that I'd again gained weight ... and I told her that I'd been dieting and she said that I'd dieted myself into quiet a weight gain. I'm on disability now ... because of panic disorder , joint and back problems (arthritis) , and depression. I'm on Ambien, Colonipin and Colonidin (sp) and I was on pain medication ... for my back ... (two whole days and no pain!!!) but it shot my blood pressure through the roof. So now I'm supposed to take 800 (whatevers) of Motrin 3 times a day. But I know that can't be good for you. So I only take it at night so I can sleep. Does anyone else have restless leg syndrome? I have a rice bag (homemade cloth) filled with rice ... put in the microwave and it holds heat for hours ... that helps my back pain so I can sleep also. Re: New Member , Welcome... Guest guest
When I get my labs done all they do is a TSH ... I was once able to more forthright in my life ... but right now I seem not to be abke to actually tell anyone to do anything. I know it's abuse issues ... I've had them for awhile ... IE the therapist ... but then I was going to a cyropracter for my back ... and he kissed me on the top of my head ... twice. I know I should have said something ... but I froze ... and just acted like it never had happened. I'm so mad at myself for not protecting myself. I'm 49 ... not 9. Guest guest
Hon, My heart just aches that you had to go through this. Please don't blame yourself for what this idiot did. He violated you and you did nothing to provoke him. Always remember that. I was raped by my boyfriend when I was younger and for years blamed myself. Then one day I woke up and decided that I wasn't going to be a victim any longer. It is up to you to make that decision too. No one can do it for you. It is great that you have such an understand husband. Lean on him but always remember that you are the one in control of YOU! And you are a valuable person! Maybe you should try a support group. I know someone that goes to Alanon and it has changed her life. She didn't go for addictions to drugs or alcohol but for being a co-dependent person, controlling person. It almost ruined her life but now she is doing amazing! I am so thankful and proud of her progress. I hope to learn from her. Anyway, I will say a prayer for you today! That always helps me in my tough times. Well, sorry for rambling. "Dreams are the touchstones of our character." Henry Thoreau Re: New Member , Welcome... Guest guest
Where is your dose now? The healthy thyroid makes between 4-1/2 and 5 grains equivelent of Armour a day. It is not possible to overdose untill you exceed this level unless you have low adrenal, then, even small amounts can overdose you. The average person feels best somewhere between 3 - 5 grains of Armour a day. Currently, people are on average taking about 1/3 the thryoid replacement dose they were taking before the TSH test. It takes less thyroid hormone to supress TSH than it takes to relieve hypothyroid symptoms. Synthroid and other T4 medications suppress TSH more than Armour. So, in other words, your tests may show normal, but you are still not getting enough thyroid to be fully treated. Another thing that happens in hypothyroidism is that small doses of thyroid medication can overly suppress TSH and thus your own thyroid will not get the message to add enough of it's own hormone to your pills to equal the 4-1/2 to 5 grains needed by your body. Thyroid replacement doses below what the body requires depends on the brain being able to tell the ailing thyroid to make enough hormone to get the total up to the 4-1/2 to 5 grains. A large percentage of thyroid patients also have pituitary/hypothalamus dysfunction making the TSH test a poor indicator of actual thyroid status. My guess as to why your tests are normal once and then later show low thyroid has to do with your adrenals. When your thyroid is increased the first few weeks, the adrenals are having to build their strength to match the new demands of higher thyroid. So, your adrenal hormone levels are low for a while. When adrenal hormones are low, thyroid cannot get into tissues and stays in the blood. This would make tests show normal to high thyroid. Then as time passes and your adrenals adjust and can make enough hormone agian, thyroid gets all taken up by cells and then your blood tests come back showing low thyroid. My guess is that you haven't reached your optimum dose, especially if you are gaining weight and don't look well. My advice is to start taking your temperture and pulse frequently and adjust your thyroid by that. Your body temps should average 98.6 after a week or so of taking it three times a day and keeping a record. Or you can use the Broda basal body temperture test (all over the web). Your pulse should stay below about 83. If it goes above that, then suspect thyroid is too high. Raise your thyroid dose in small increments of about 1/4 grain once every two weeks to a month untill your body temperature is normal and symptoms have left. If your doctor won't help you raise your thyroid up untill you feel healthy and can maintain your weight, find another doctor. If you are taking Synthroid, you may be having a conversion problem and are not getting all the energy you need from your medicine. My advice then is to switch to Armour or a T4/T3 combination. I'm not saying labs are 'all telling'.. symptoms also mean a lot about how a person is doing... but you are both feeling poorly... I'm curious about the why.... Guest guest
Aaaaaaaaaaaa!! It's license pulling time. I know, my humor $ucks sometimes, so maybe I wouldn't go that far unless he decided to pressure me, then we're talking the most national newspaper I could find, hehe!
