(Address: Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Internal Medicine, Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan). Summary: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 26 type 2 diabetics with HbA1c levels between 7.0 and 10.0% and triglycerides <400 mg/dL, results indicate that dietary supplementation with xylooligosaccharides (XOS) may exert beneficial effects on blood sugar and lipid profile. The subjects were randomized to supplementation with 4 g/d XOS or placebo, for a period of 8 weeks. XOS supplementation was associated with decreases in glucose, HbA1c and fructosamine concentrations, and total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, oxidized low density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) and apolipoprotein B levels, and erythrocyte catalase activity. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, " …dietary supplementation with XOS for 8 wk was effective in improving the blood sugar and lipids in type 2 diabetes, indicating that XOS-containing diets might be beneficial to DM subjects.
