can you provide a link to the study? mary

[ ] Folic acid may increase colon cancer risk - Cause for

concern?

Since most of you take folic acid along with Methotrexate, does

yesterday's study on high dose folic acid possibly increasing the risk

of colon cancer cause concern?

The findings are published in the June 6 issue of the Journal of the

American Medical Association.

I heard the story on the evening news and read an article in the

paper yesterday. I hope that the 2 inserted links will get you to the

story - one is from ABC News and the other Fox News. I am not good

with this, but perhaps would have access to the actual study.

It caused me concern for my Mother who has taken folic acid in doses

ranging from 2 to 4 mg a day for almost 3 years to lessen the side

effects of MTX. Granted all of the RA meds have their dangers, but

this one surprised me. Maybe increased doses in conjunction with MTX

therapy do not present the same risks. I thought someone here might

know more than my limited understanding might allow and offer some

clarity.

Thanks -

,

I recommend discussing this with your mother's physician, but I'm not sure

this single study is something to be overly concerned about.

One important thing to consider is the participants:

" Participants included 1021 men and women with a recent history of

colorectal

adenomas and no previous invasive large intestine carcinoma. "
