Hi, I am a group member as my brother has early detected prostate cancer, gleason score 6. He can't handle the side effects of surgery and we will probabaly go with radiation. Is there a good website or info describing the different types of radiation now available and side effects? many thanks,

Dana

I admire the helping hand, but I recommend helping Brother to do his own

studying. That way, he'll get information at first hand.

These are the types of RT (radiation therapy):

IMRT: intensity-modulated RT (various methods and brand names)

IGRT: image-guided RT, a more sophisticated targeting method

3D-CRT: Rather outmoded, but still used in various places

Proton: The above use photons.

Permanent brachytherapy, aka " seeds " : Placement of tiny radioactive

pellets in the gland

High-Dose brachytherapy: temporary insertion of highly-radioactive

wires, withdrawn after a short interval

To learn more, I recommend that he go to the encyclopedic and objective

website of the Prostate Cancer Research Institute (PCRI) at

http://prostate-cancer.org/index.html

and search on the above terms. He'll also find a great amount of other

useful information.

Also: Google the terms.

Bear in mind that we are all different, and the side effects (SEs) vary

greatly from patient to patient.

Regards,

Steve J
