I am on methatrexate 40 mg every Friday night (just took it). And I take 5mg

of Folic acid everyday except Friday. Rheumatologist never mentioned it but

after a year on MTX my Pharmacist asked if I was taking folic acid as well

and nearly had a fit when I said " What's that ? "

From the discussion here, am I right in thinking that the MTX would be more

effective if I cut down the amount of folic acid I am taking ???? Maybe I

would have to take as much MTX.

Greg.

Hi,

I take 15mg of MTX and 5mg of folic acid. I have been taking theses

meds for 2 years and have always been told to take the folic acid

once a week at least 2 days before the MTX.

Greg,

I'm not exactly sure if the MTX would be more effective if you lessened your

folic acid. I'm thinking that if you combine your MTX with something else, like

cyclosporine, then it would work more efficiently. I know that MTX never worked

as well as it needed to when I took it alone, only when I used it in combination

with something else.

Hi there. I take 5 mg of folic acid every day. I used to be on

methotrex, however I had horrible reactions so was switched to Avara

about 2 years ago. I was told the folic acid helps with the hair loss

due to methotrex or Arava so I continue with the folic acid and doc

seems to think it's OK at that level.

Hi and Greg and anyone else with ?s about the Folic Acid. I don't know

anything about the doseage amts, but I talked to a Pharmacist today who told me

the reason it is suggested to take with MTX is because of it's ability to

counteract some of the possible side effects of the MTX specifically related to

the regeneration of red blood cells. He says since MTX is an immunosuppressive

drug, you need the MTX to help keep things re the red blood cells under control.

The concept of not taking on the day of the MTX is to allow the MTX to get into

your system well. Don't know how much this does or does not help, but thought I

would pass along what I learned!

sorry everyone..a little typo...you need the FOLIC Acid to help keep your red

blood cells under control while taking MTX. I mistakenly said you need the Mtx

in my initial posting!! sorry...brain fade!! what can I say? There are many

other rationals for the Folic Acid I suppose, the red blood cell regeneration is

the one my Pharmacist focused on!

thanks

There has never been sound science behind the recommendation to skip the

folic acid on the day the methotrexate is given. Folic acid is not removed

from

the body fast enough for that to make any difference in normal rheumatic

disease therapy.

Abbie has always gotten folic acid every day. However about a year ago, her

nausea was so bad that the rheumy changed her to leucovorin (folinic acid)

the day of and the day after injection. I have never heard a good reason why

folic acid not be give the day of mtx dose.

because she is having problems with nausea. I know that I don't give her

the folic acid the day of the injection, but if I give her the injection now

twice a week-then do I skip two doses of folic acid a week? Thanks,

Thank you for all of your responses. I will give her the folic acid 7 days a

week. Last night's shot went well, and she is fine today. Much better

experience than last week. (n, 15, systemic)

I called my Rheumy's office today to discuss the side effects I've been

having with my MTX. I've been taking 8 tablets a week for the last 4 weeks

and am having quite a bit of stomach pain and diarrhea among other things.

On the sheet I was given when I started the MTX, it said to call if I had

these side effects. Anyway, the nurse told me that doc wants me to

decrease my MTX to 6 tabs a weeks and increase my folic acid to 3mg per day.

I'm just wondering if anyone else takes that much folic acid and if it helps

with the type of MTX problems that I'm having. Anyone?
