Just received my June issue of Consumer Reports. There is an article in

it entitled " The Truth about Dieting " . In it, the CR authors discuss the

pit-falls of the various diets and weight loss programs, and in it, the

low-carb diet (using moderate carb levels) received a favorable report as

being the most successful approach to weight loss. They also discussed

the impact of the glycemic index on controlling blood sugar levels.

They reported on a number of different diet approaches to losing weight

and report that the most successful used a form of low to moderate carb

WOE. The Lo-Carb WOE was the most successful in not only losing the

weight, but also in keeping it off. Also discussed was the pitfall of

the 'lo-fat' diets. They did express some reservation about the long

term effects of the Atkins diet but felt it was OK if you are in good

health (no kidney, etc. type problems).

In one study of 101 subjects, they recommended increasing the fat content

of the diet to a moderate 35% level from a 'control group's' 20% level.

The low fat group followed a 'standard low calorie, high carbohydrate'

diet, while the other group followed a diet equally low in calories but

with as much as 35% of the calories from healthful fats (like nuts, fish,

and olive oil). In this test, the low fat group gained an average of 6.4

pounds while the moderate fat group lost an average of 9 pounds over the

18 month study period.

They also credited exercise as a means to maintaining the weight loss

along with continuing the LC diet. The exercise included walking along

with weight lifting for the most successful 'losers'.

Overall it makes very interesting reading. I recommend that you go to

your local book store/magazine store or library and getting your hands on

this issue. It's a keeper!
